Is Macklin Celebrini the True "Next One?" (featured)

The hockey title “The Next One” is a play on Wayne Gretzky’s famous nickname, “The Great One.” In hockey culture, The Next One is a label reserved for a rare, usually Canadian, up-and-coming player believed to have the potential to become a sport-dominating force. A player on the level of legends like Gordie Howe, Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, Maurice Richard, and Mario Lemieux.

The first player I remember being given that title was Sidney Crosby, and he’s probably the most famous recipient of it. After Crosby, the only other player I’ve truly heard carry that label is Connor McDavid. Both players are definitely “Next Ones.”

To me, there are star players, superstar players, generational players—and then there’s this other, almost mythical tier we call The Next One.

Beyond Sid and McJesus...

There have been plenty of candidates over the years.  Most recently Connor Bedard started hearing the label in junior hockey. There was a time when Steven Stamkos and John Tavares were considered possibilities. Eric Lindros was called it often before the NHL and later Auston Matthews despite being America…was part of that conversation too. And make no mistake: All of those players are superstars. Many are generational talents. But they’re not The Next One.

Now, in 2025–26, it finally feels like we’ve found a legitimate heir to that title—and his name is Macklin Celebrini.

What makes Celebrini “The Next One”?

Elite Track Record at a Young Age

Celebrini was selected first overall in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft by the San Jose Sharks. Before even reaching the NHL, he showed just how special he was by winning the Hobey Baker Award at only 17 years old, becoming the youngest player ever to do so as a college hockey player.

Remarkable Rookie Performance

At 18, Celebrini led all NHL rookies in points per game, finished second in goals (25) and assists (38), and tied for second in total points (63). The only other teenagers in NHL history to reach the 50-point mark faster than him? Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby.

Continues to Elevate His Game

Early in the 2025–26 season, Celebrini became the NHL’s leading scorer with 23 points in his first 15 games—something only Wayne Gretzky and Steve Yzerman had previously accomplished.

Exceptional Skill and Impact

Despite being just 18 years old, Celebrini plays with a skill level and hockey IQ far beyond his age. He ranks near the top of several NHL statistical categories and already looks like a franchise-defining, dynamic two-way center.

I.m calling it...

The combination of elite skill, historic rookie production, and continued dominance makes Macklin Celebrini not just another star—but a legitimate, rare, and truly deserving “Next One.”
