Looking at the Blues roster, there is one position that is in dire need of an upgrade, and that is the center position.
David Backes will hold down the number one center position for the Blues, but there is a big hole in the second center position. Vladimir Sobotka has done a very solid job of holding down the fort on the second line. Ideally, he's a third line center who can chip in on the offense.
There aren't a lot of options on the market right now that the Blues could upgrade at center. There are a couple of names out there right now, including Ryan Kesler, Paul Stastny, and David Legwand are the top three centers available today.
Ryan Kesler holds a no-trade clause and will control where he goes, and it's said that he's not going to accept a deal to St. Louis. Paul Stastny, a name a lot of Blues fans might know well, as he's a St. Louis kid. However, it's highly unexpected that he'll be dealt today and even more unlikely that Colorado would deal him to a division rival. Stastny is a viable option if he doesn't resign with Colorado this off-season and test free agency, however it's not a likely option for today.
That brings us to David Legwand, a long-time Nashville Predator and has come to a point in which a trade is plausible. Legwand has 10 goals, 30 assists on the season and continues to be a strong top six center. The beautiful thing about Legwand playing nearly 1,000 games in Nashville, is you don't have to teach him how to play in a defensive system. He'll add timely offense, he'll contribute in the defensive zone, and he'll be a big upgrade over what the Blues currently have.
If there is another option for the Blues today, it would be upgrading the scoring by acquiring a winger. With this option, the Blues may need to find a new home for Derek Roy. Roy has been bouncing back and forth between being a winger and being a center this season and has added offense. However looking at his playoff resume, an upgrade could be a viable option.
This brings me to Mike Cammalleri, the Calgary Flames forward. Despite only having 14 goals and 22 points this season, Cammalleri is known to be a playoff performer, something the Blues lack.
Cammalleri has played in 32 playoff games in the NHL, between Calgary and Montreal. In those 32 games, Cammalleri has 17 goals, 15 assists, for 32 points. He's a point a game player in the postseason and he's been known to be a clutch scorer when the games really matter. That is exactly what the Blues have needed in the last few playoffs. They have missed some simple goals in the playoffs and Cammalleri would be a strong option to fill the hole of a scoring forward on the roster. Despite a very strong season by Alexander Steen, and the coming out parties of Jaden Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko, adding another scoring forward might be exactly what the Blues need.
