Wednesday Random Notes
- Tonight’s SlapShot Radio is going to be a good one, Pete Weber and I are live at 6pm CDT on 94.9 Game 2 in Nashville. Our guests include a reporter from the Arizona Republic that is doing excellent reporting on the whole Coyotes vs. Glendale mess, Peter Corbett. NHL Network analyst and draft expert Craig Button will help us preview the upcoming NHL draft and the voice of the Calder Cup champion Manchester Monarchs, Ken Cali. That’s all tonight on SlapShot Radio.
- The best part of Monday night’s Stanley Cup celebration was seeing former Preds captain Kimmo Timonen lift the cup. One of the most beloved of the original Predators and a former captain of the team, Timonen exudes class… it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.
- The Predators announced the signing of Finnish goaltender Juuse Saros to a three year entry level contract. Saros had a solid run as Pekka Rinne’s backup during the recent Worlds including a shutout.
- Former Predator Sergei Kostitsyn is close to coming back to the NHL according to multiple sources. No team names have been floated though…
- Craig Custance’s blog on espn.com has the Predators at number five in his Top Five Contenders for the 2016 Cup. From his computer to the hockey gods ears.
- The initial odds for the 2016 Cup were established by Bovada yesterday. The Preds start at 16/1, tied with Boston, just behind Minnesota, Montreal, Pittsburgh and LA at 14/1, ahead of Washington at 18/1.
- The criticism of Ben Bishop and Tyler Johnson for revealing their injuries on Monday night is insane. Talk about you classic “Kobiashi Maru… scenario… It wasn’t whining or excuse making… it was answering a directly asked question. If they don’t answer it, they are being jerks, if they do answer, they are whining… for heaven’s sake… get over it. I have a suggestion for anyone asked a question by Mike MIlbury… considering he has such a problem with it… don’t answer them.
- When does Joel Quinneville earn a spot in the pantheon of NHL head coaches? He is 3rd on the all time coaching wins list and all time playoff win list.
- Oh, Glendale City COuncil… you magnificent idiots… you actually have decided to double down on your stupidity. After a closed-door City Council meeting yesterday, Glendale has decided to go forward in its suicide mission to void the Coyotes contract with the city. The Coyotes may negotiate with you… but it may be a negotiation to leave Glendale with a white elephant and go back downtown.
- The Coyotes only have one preseason game scheduled in Glendale this upcoming season.
- This year’s Stanley Cup Final ended up being the second most watched final in the US. Ratings were up 11% over last year’s NY/LA final.
- A big “Get Well Soon… going out to the Voice of the Milwaukee Brewers, Bob Uecker. He was struck by a ball during batting practice and sustained a concussion. Game Six won the Monday night ratings race.
- Monday was Alexi Yashin Independence Day for the New York Islanders. They have been paying out a buy out of a really silly contract since releasing the player in 2007! Oh… BTW, they still are paying on Rick DiPietro… his buyout ends in 2029.
