Sharks Sunk - SSR Podcast (nashville)

The podcast for last night’s SlapShot Radio is posted below… enjoy!

Calle Jarnkrok’s first of the year was a doozy, breaking a 1-1 third period tie with the San Jose Sharks and delivering Nashville’s first win on the West Coast. The story is becoming quite familiar, an early goal, solid defense, great goaltending and a timely game winner.

Once again the third and fourth lines were the key to victory as Eric Nystom potted the first goal a little over three minutes in. Sharks goaltender Martin Jones has been excellent so far this season and last night was no exception, but Nystrom beat him with a one-timer to put the Preds in front early. Things settled down quickly to a tight checking, physical battle as both teams gave up chances only to be foiled by outstanding netminding from both goaltenders… frankly, Jones was the reason the game stayed close as he stopped multiple scoring opportunities in the first period.

Thngs tsyed even until early in the third period, when Sharks captain Joe Pavelski took a beating in front of the net before bouncing back up to find the puck on his stick, he buried it to tie the game just 1:28 in to the third period. The Preds D just couldn’t get the puck clear after Rinne made the first two saves.

Jarnkrok’s tying goal came off of a nice conversion of a 2 on 1 rush, firing the puck high glove that found its way into the net with not a lot of room to spare. A rising wrister that handcuffed the Sharks goalie and put the Preds in front to stay.

So game one of the CMA Trip goes into the win column, next up, a dangerous back to back in SoCal. A Saturday matinee in Los Angeles versus the streaking Kings and late Sunday afternoon start in Anaheim against a wounded Ducks team fighting for its life. Should be fun!

Random Notes

- Nine games in and the Predators have yet to allow a first period goal.

- Cody Hodgson is off to a slow start, still scoreless after nine games. His injury in training camp could be a factor here.

- Tweet of the day from @ZackTN

- An announced crowd of 15,219 last night in San Jose… they must’ve all been in the upper bowl… but seriously… this was the first time since 2006 since the Sharks announced back-to-back crowds of less than 16,000 (Stick tap to Curtis Pashelka of the San Jose Mercury News for that nugget.) Clearly, the Shark fanbase is in “show me “ mode.

- Pittsburgh is definitely finding its way, using last Saturday’s win in Nashville as a springboard and going into Verizon Center last night to take down the Caps.

- There are three teams in the league with double digit goal differentials, Montreal (+19!) Florida (+12) and Nashville (+10)

- I know I will be watching the Ducks / Blues game tonight, game seven in an eight game stretch against Central Division teams for Anaheim and the last game of their disastrous road trip. Their next game will be against Nashville on Sunday.
