When restricted free agent defenseman Tyson Barrie took the Colorado Avalanche it was to earn himself a pay raise from his $3.2 million salary, and, a long term contract extension. The Avs offered Barrie a two year deal worth $8.25 million.

Barrie countered with a one year $6 million ask.

On Friday, the Avs and Barrie argued their respective cases to the arbitrator.

Today, the arb ruling came down and Barrie is now the proud owner of a $22 million contract extension according to Elliotte Friedman. It's not yet known if teh $5.5M x 4 year deal is the arbitrator's number or if its the number that the Avs and Barrie's agent negotiated.

There were 25 players who elected to go to arbitration. Only Barrie had his case heard by the arbitrator.

The AAV are as follows: $5 million, $5.25 million, $5.75 million, $6 million.

In the end, Barrie will be a $6 million man.

Barrie 13 goals and 49 points in 78 games last season.

Barrie, 25, was selected by Coloradoin the third round (64th overall) of the 2009 NHL Draft. He has 158 points on 40 goals and 113 assists in 264 career NHL games.

Now, still unsigned RFA defensemen Rasmus Ristolainen, Hampus Lindholm and Jacob Trouba have a solid comparable to use in their negotiations with their respective teams.

Now that Barrie's arbitration hearing has concluded and he has re-signed with the Avs, I expect Ristolainen, Lindholm and Trouba to finalize their new contract extensions this week.
