Training Camp: Day 6 (dylan mclaughlin)

Day 6 of Blackhawks training camp included practice but also the preseason opener against the Red Wings. Besides the first game action of the new year, the most newsworthy note from yesterday was Mike Hardman coming off COVID protocol to rejoin the team on the ice.

In full transparency, I wasn't able to watch the entire game due to work and access issues and only caught the highlights from the Blackhawks website and social media. Thus, there won't be much game analysis beyond a breakdown of goals scored and allowed.

Scoring Recap

1st Goal: Rasmussen (0-1)

Wyatt Kalynuk had a tire blowout that prevented him from catching up with the play but Henrik Borgstrom didn't help matters by being too late with retreating back to support as Michael Rasmussen got in uncontested to beat Kevin Lankinen.

2nd Goal: Kubalik (1-1)

Jonathan Toews and Philipp Kurashev executed a textbook give-and-go along the right flank to get the Wings defense reeling and drawing all eyes away from Dominik Kubalik who had plenty of time and space to bang home the backhanded equalizer.

3rd Goal: Hagel (2-1)

Kirby Dach set up Brandon Hagel for a wrister from between the circles. What made the play was not only Hagel's drive down the middle lane to create a passing outlet for Dach but also the skill level of Caleb Jones to buy time by walking the line.

4th Goal: Khaira (3-1)

Heads-up play by MacKenzie Entwistle to not just admire his feed up to Connor Murphy at the point and instead stayed with the developing play by attempting a redirect of the point shot which linemate Jujhar Khaira was successful at tipping in.

5th Goal: Stephens (3-2)

Mitchell Stephens split a triangle of Chicago defenders by blowing past Kubalik and Murphy in the neutral zone then sidestepping around Riley Stillman to release a shot on goal that had eyes and trickled under the catcher's mitt of Lankinen.

6th Goal: Ryan (3-3)

With an extra attacker in the waning minutes, Bobby Ryan poked in the game-tying marker as the puck was a pinball in the slot bouncing around amongst a slew of Hawks and Wings players. Adam Gaudette could have exerted more pressure to tie up Ryan.

Shootout: Ryan (3-4)
