Start by preheating the oven with the expectations of a deep Stanley Cup playoff run, do three weeks of prep work, assembling the ingredients, checking for freshness and measuring out in a precise manner. Throw in a dash of Filip Forsberg, a dollop of PK Subban and add in a bit of vintage Pekka Rinne and; Pred Nation is enjoying the result. Last night at Madison Square Garden the Nashville Predators started their season long recipe with a workmanlike 3-2 win over the New Your Rangers.
Now, that’s the way to start a season, not too high, not too low.
After a first period where both teams had some decent chances stoned by excellent veteran goaltenders, Henrik Lundqvist looked in fine form as did Rinne. Speaking of Rinne, former Pred prospect (and Pred Nation boo target) Jimmy Vesey will be having nightmares about the big Finn as Rinne stopped chance after chance from the forward.
Full marks to the Rangers, they battled hard and played well. It’s only one game, but this team may be better than preseason predictions called… they brought real effort. If new head coach David Quinn can drive that kind of effort on a nightly basis, the rebuild on Broadway may not take as long as thought.
Take the win… but there are definitely some things to work on. The first one was called out by PK Subban in a post game interview with Brian Boucher on NBCSN. Penalties, staying out of the box, calling himself out for the late penalty he took that, fortunately, was negated with a really poorly timed too many men penalty on the Rangers. Subban said that “it all starts with discipline.…
Agreed PK… agreed.
The Predators will remain in the Big Apple as they play the 1-0-0 New York Islanders tomorrow night in Brooklyn. Barry Trotz’s new team won their lid lifter last night with a 2-1 decision over Carolina.
Here are the highlights from last night…

Random Notes
- Ryan Hartman was activated from IR and played last night.
- Scratches for Nashville last night, Anthony Bitetto, Matt Irwin and Freddie Gaudreau.
- The much criticized Zac Rinaldo had a good start to his career in gold… he went +1 last night with two shots on goal, two hits and a penalty. He brought speed and had a really nice chance in the third period.
- Just good to see Forberg and Subban get going early in the season.
- The Turris/Fiala/Smith line was dangerous all night… they generated chances and were buzzing the net well. Turris and Smith set up Forsberg’s goal.
- The Vegas Golden Knights started their season with a thud last night, giving up five consecutive goals to the Philadelphia Flyers in their 5-2 loss. Vegas goaltender Marc-Andre Fluery was pulled halfway through the second period.
- The Winnipeg Jets got off to a fast start with a dominating 5-1 win at St. Louis last night.
- Every team in the Central has a game under their belt, only the Blues and Wild dropped their openers.
