So Many Goals on so Little Shots

A well-known cliché in hockey states that you need to play 60 minutes to win a game, but apparently that doesn’t apply against the Devils and their sub-par goaltending. Yesterday, the Canadiens scored 7 goals on just 26 shots and didn’t even really bother playing in the middle frame but they still managed to win the game 7-4. Joint Moslon Cup winners for the month of March; Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield were up to their old tricks again, each grabbing a goal and an assist, but the big point getters were the support staff.

In his first game in ages, Kale Clague, just back from injury collected 3 points, but once again had his share of defensive struggles. He may still be young, but I doubt he’s in Montreal to stay, I see the organization prioritizing its prospects over a waiver pick-up to be honest. Especially with St-Louis at the helm who looks like a “young player whisperer… so far. Chris Wideman, who was out of the line-up for the last 2 games to make way for Jordan Harris was back last night and collected 3 points as well. That’s 14 points in 14 games for him. Since St-Louis took over, the defense corps has produced 60 points in 26 games, under Ducharme, it was 59 points in 45 games played.

There’s no doubt that the blue liners are now much more involved in the coach’s plan and have benefitted greatly from his arrival. Speaking of the coach, he explained that Harris was scratched because he’s got a lot of defensemen right now and that they all need to hit the ice for game action at times. Furthermore, he believes that after playing 2 games, Harris could learn a lot from watching the game and seeing how things go. Also, letting Clague and Wideman play allows them to show what they can do and perhaps raise interest for a new contract this offseason, wherever that may be. Taking for granted that Petry will leave this offseason, I see Romanov, Savard and Edmundson as the 3 vets on the blue line next year, Harris, Schueneman, Barron and Guhle will fight it out for the remaining roles. If the organization feels like 2 of them could still use more seasoning, they might decide to keep Wideman for another year, time will tell.

Christian Dvorak was the other top scorer last night with a goal and 2 assists and there’s no doubt that performance will do him a world of good. As for Brendan Gallagher, he’s got 4 points in 2 games since returning from injury. On the 4th line Tuesday and on the 3rd yesterday alongside Armia and Evans. The Canadiens will now take on the Leafs in Toronto Saturday before heading back home to battle the Jets on Monday.

Un cliché bien connu au hockey dit qu’il faut jouer 60 minutes pour remporter un match, mais apparemment, cela ne s’applique pas contre les Devils du New Jersey et les performances douteuses de leurs gardiens. Hier, les Canadiens ont marqué 7 buts sur seulement 26 tirs et ils ne se sont même pas vraiment donné la peine de jouer en 2e période, mais on quand même réussi à  vaincre les Devils 7-4. Les gagnants conjoints de la Coupe Molson pour mars; Nick Suzuki et Cole Caufield ont encore fait des leurs ajoutant chacun un but et une aide à  leur fiche, mais c’est le personnel de soutien qui a volé la vedette hier.

Dans son premier match depuis une éternité, Kale Clague, qui revenait d’une blessure, a récolté 3 points, mais encore une fois il a connu sa part d’ennuis dans la zone défensive. Il est peut-être encore jeune, mais je doute qu’il soit à  Montréal pour rester, je crois que l’organisation priorisera plutôt ses propres espoirs plutôt qu’un joueur acquis par le ballottage pour être honnête. Encore plus maintenant que St-Louis est aux commandes et qu’il semble particulièrement doué avec les jeunes espoirs. Chris Wideman, qui avait été rayé de la formation pour les 2 derniers matchs pour faire place à  Jordan Harris, était également de retour et il a aussi ajouté 3 points à  sa fiche. à‡a lui donne 14 points à  ses 14 derniers matchs. Depuis l’arrivée de St-Louis, la brigade défensive a produit 60 points en 26 matchs, sous Ducharme, c’était 59 points en 45 parties.

Aucun doute, les défenseurs sont beaucoup plus impliqués dans le style préconisé par le nouvel entraîneur et ont donc bénéficié de son arrivée. Parlant de l’entraîneur, il a expliqué qu’Harris n’était pas de l’alignement parce qu’il a beaucoup de défenseurs sous la main et que tous doivent voir de l’action en situation de matchs. De plus, il croit qu’après avoir joué 2 matchs, Harris pouvait également apprendre en regardant le match et en voyant comment les choses se déroulaient. On peut aussi penser que de faire jouer les Clague et Wideman leur donne une chance de montrer ce qu’ils savent faire, question de se magasiner un contrat pour la prochaine saison. En tenant pour acquis que Petry partira pendant la saison morte, je vois Romanov, Savard et Edmundson comme les 3 vétérans à  la ligne bleue pour la prochaine campagne pendant qu’Harris, Barron, Schueneman et Guhle se battront pour les 3 autres postes. Si l’organisation croit que 2 d’entre eux ont besoin de prendre de l’expérience dans la AHL, l’état-major pourrait décider de garder Wideman pour une autre année, le temps nous le dira.

Christian Dvorak a été l’autre meilleur pointeur hier avec un but et 2 passes et il n’y a aucun doute que cette performance a dà» lui faire le plus grand bien. Quant à  Brendan Gallagher, il a 4 points en 2 matchs depuis son retour au jeu, sur le 4e trio mardi et sur le 3e hier avec Armia et Evans. Les Canadiens affronteront maintenant les Leafs à  Toronto samedi avant de rentrer à  la maison pour en découdre avec les Jets lundi.
