Reviewing the chatter online in the Blackhawks blogosphere and social media universe, Davidson and Tulsky are popular choices amongst fans given their relative youth compared to NHL retreads like Chiarelli yet still possessing considerable experience especially in analytics which is more and more ruling the day in roster management.
While Chiarelli is the least favorable candidate as a result of his unpopularity in the Bruins and Oilers organizations, Mellanby could offer that sweet spot as a candidate who has substantial experience with overseeing player personnel in a variety of roles with the Canucks (2007-2010) and Canadiens (2012-2021) without ever being the GM.
Back to Davidson and Tulsky. What makes them attractive as candidates also could be a drawback depending on how much stock they place in analytics. It's no doubt that analytics plays a key factor in how decisions are made about players in the system and also for players in other systems who may be trade and free agency targets.
If analytics are the ultimate factor for decisions, then this may be cause for concern as players shouldn't be reduced to a set of numbers. For example, Tulsky has been known to create algorithms to analyze players. An algorithm can be helpful but so can the simple eye test by watching games and ear test by listening to coaches and scouts.
Of course, it's dumbing it down too much to say that a player personnel decision is going to be made off of one data point or even a set of them that are numerically defined. Likewise, a decision isn't going to be made based on just game tape and crib notes. Both sources of information and any other sources are necessary to make optimal decisions.
Thus, the ideal candidate for general manager would be one who can assemble a team of decision makers who can generate an endless supply of inputs on every single player in the system. Analytics on their own won't get the job done and neither will the old-school "I call it like I see it" mentality. Both and everything in between are necessary.
