The San Jose Sharks picked up a home win over the Toronto Maple Leafs last night, winning 4-3 in overtime.

The Sharks managed to take back the lead in the second period off another goal from Couture, who finished off a nice passing play on a 5-on-3. Then only 42 seconds later on the same power play, Couture’s shot was deflected in by Meier through traffic, putting the Sharks ahead 3-1. The Sharks dominated the frame, outshooting Toronto 14-6, but right before the end of the period, Mitch Marner was able to score off a pass on an odd-man rush, cutting the lead to one through 40 minutes.
The Leafs then tied the game on a power play early in the third period, with Auston Matthews firing a one-timer from long-range past Kahkonen. There weren’t a ton of great chances exchanged through the final frame after that, and the game continued to overtime.
In the extra frame, Timo Meier made a great play to break up a pass in the defensive zone then sent Erik Karlsson on a breakaway the other way, and Karlsson made a nice move to beat Kallgren, securing a Sharks win.
It was a really good outing for the Sharks against a strong opponent, with an especially strong second frame. San Jose allowed just 25 shots overall and while their two-goal lead was erased and it took until overtime to get the win, it was still one of the team’s best games this year.
Timo Meier finally picking up his first goal of the season was also important, after a really slow start thus far. Generally, it was just good to see San Jose’s top forwards actually being their top forwards.
The Sharks have built a little bit of momentum recently, with three wins in their past five games. While they’re not going to turn things around to be a playoff team, they’ve at least been more competitive.
San Jose’s next game comes tomorrow against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
