The San Jose Sharks picked up their first win of the season last night, defeating the New York Rangers in overtime.
Oskar Lindblom re-entered the Sharks’ lineup, while Kevin Labanc was scratched.

The Rangers responded under two minutes into the second period, as Filip Chytil took the puck off Luke Kunin in the neutral zone and went down ice on a breakaway alone, sliding the puck through James Reimer to tie the game. Then a little later in the frame, Artemi Panarin took a pass on a rush and wired a one-timer past Reimer, giving the Rangers the lead. The Sharks were outshot 13-4 in the frame, but with about six minutes to go in the period, Radim Simek got the puck from Matt Nieto and made a nice move in the slot to find a lane, before putting sliding the puck under Igor Shesterkin to tie the game after 40 minutes.
San Jose then put together a great third period, outshooting New York by a massive 16-2 margin. Despite some good chances though, the Sharks couldn’t capitalize to take the lead and the game continued to overtime.
Under a minute into the extra frame though, the Sharks had possession in New York’s end and after a chance in-close was stopped by Shesterkin, Timo Meier followed up to get the puck to Erik Karlsson, who put the puck into the open net to give the Sharks their first win of the year.
Obviously, it’s huge for the Sharks to get their first win of the season. They also did it by limiting the Rangers to just 23 shots all game and completely outplayed New York in the third period. It was a good effort for the Sharks and hopefully, they can build a bit of momentum from here.
San Jose’s was key once again, as the Sharks managed to kill off all five of New York’s power play opportunities. As a result, their penalty kill remains perfect through six games.
While James Reimer didn’t have a ton of work, he did make some important saves in the first 40 minutes. Reimer is off to a great start and through four games, he holds a .918 save percentage.
San Jose will be back in action tomorrow afternoon against the New Jersey Devils
