The Carolina Hurricanes shut out the Chicago Blackhawks last night, picking up a 3-0 road win.
Max Lajoie was in Carolina’s lineup after being called up, with both Dylan Coghlan and Calvin de Haan as scratches. Pyotr Kochetkov got his second start of the season.

The teams traded some good chances in the second frame, with Kochetkov being forced to make some big stops. Then late in the period, Jesper Fast made a great play to knock down Caleb Jones’ outlet pass from behind Chicago’s net, then Andrei Svechnikov gathered the puck and beat Mrazek, extending the lead to 3-0 through two periods.
Kochetkov had to be solid in the third period, but preserved the shut out, as Carolina picked up a 3-0 win.
It’s a key win for the Hurricanes against a beatable opponent, following three losses in their last four games coming into the matchup.
Obviously, it’s a huge game for Kochetkov as well, making 27 saves on route to his first NHL shutout. He faced some great chances but was excellent and it’s already clear how good his movement is in net, always being able to follow the puck and take away the bottom part of the net.
Max Lajoie has since been sent back down to the AHL, but it was interesting to see the Hurricanes bring him into the lineup, given the game was in Chicago. Lajoie has four assists in 10 AHL games with the Wolves this season and played just under 14 minutes last night.
With the win, Carolina improves to 10-5-1 this season. Their next game will come at home on Thursday, in a rematch against the Colorado Avalanche.
