The Carolina Hurricanes suffered a road loss against the Colorado Avalanche last night, falling 4-1.

Teuvo Teravainen was out after being placed on injured reserve, so Derek Stepan drew back into the lineup. Antti Raanta also made his sixth start of the year, with Frederik Andersen injured.

The Hurricanes put together a pretty decent first period, outshooting Colorado for a lot of the frame. However, Carolina couldn’t capitalize on some power plays and ended up getting into penalty trouble of their own, with the Avalanche capitalizing off a flukey power play goal from Cale Makar, in which Makar’s shot went over the net but bounced back towards Raanta, going off him and in. Then only three minutes later, Mikko Rantanen knocked Calvin de Haan down in the corner for possession and got a pass over to Makar who struck again, roofing a shot past Raanta to extend the lead to 2-0.

We saw a pretty low-event second frame after that, but the Hurricanes didn’t manage to get much going with only six shots in the period. However, Carolina got back to within one late in the frame, with Jordan Staal burying a pass from Jordan Martinook on a 2-on-1.

Colorado ended up restoring the two-goal lead early in the second period though, with Nathan MacKinnon taking a pass on an odd-man rush and sneaking a shot through Raanta. The Hurricanes couldn’t mount a comeback after that, even giving up quite a few quality rush chances. Then with about two minutes to go, Rantanen sealed the deal with an empty netter, as Colorado took a 4-1 win.

While the shots were close at just 28-25 for Colorado, the Hurricanes gave up a lot of chances and Raanta had to be good to prevent the Avalanche from burying a few more.

Carolina didn’t get a ton going offensively, but the larger issue was the power play. Whereas the Avalanche were generating chances on their power plays, the Hurricanes went 0-for-5 on the man advantage and managed only a single shot over those five power plays, according to NaturalStatTrick.com.

The Hurricanes did explode for seven goals in the prior game against Edmonton, but have still managed a single goal or less in three of their last four games. Teravainen being out didn’t help, but the Hurricanes continue to need more from other forwards. Jesperi Kotkaniemi has just three points in 15 games this season despite a large role, while Seth Jarvis hasn’t necessarily made as much of an impact as maybe expected.

The Hurricanes will be back in action tomorrow, as they face the Chicago Blackhawks.
