On May 31st, the Canadiens won game 7 of their first-round match-up with the Leafs and since then, the Leafs have been looking for redemption. Winning tonight won’t make up for losing in the first round yet again, but it will ease the healing process. On the other side of the ice will be the new Habs, a team that has lost its captain, its franchise goalie and 2 of their 4 centers. A lot of people are already saying the Canadiens won’t make the playoffs this year and that’s fine by coach Dominique Ducharme, speaking to the press this morning he said: “I’d say that right now, we’re pretty much in the same situation we were towards the end of last year. Not a lot of people believe in us, so we’ll see what we can do to change that….
The Canadiens were the underdogs from the start to the end of the playoffs last season and that suited them just fine. Let’s hope the tag has the same effect on them this time around. Tonight, Jake Allen will be between the pipes. With Price out of action for an indefinite amount of time, Allen’s contribution will once again be crucial for the CH. As for the Leafs’ net, it will be given to Jack Campbell, who appears to be their number one now that Frederik Andersen has left town and that Petr Mrazek has been signed.
There will be no Auston Matthews for Toronto as he’s currently injured, and Mitch Marner will be a game-time decision. However, John Tavares will be in action and after leaving the series during game one after a gruesome concussion, he’ll be more than ready to go and will want to lead the Leafs to their first win of the new season. For the CH, Hoffman, Edmundson, Price, Byron, Weber and Niku are all still out of action. This morning, the Canadiens also announced that Ryan Poehling had been sent down to Laval, meaning that he failed to grab the center role which was given to him on a silver platter. Tonight, Adam Brooks and Alex Belzile will be the healthy scratch and the Canadiens will use the following lines and pairings:
Toffoli-Suzuki-Caufield Drouin-Dvorak-Anderson Armia-Evans-Gallagher Perreault-Paquette-Lehkonen Kulak-Petry Chiarot-Savard Romanov-Wideman
The game starts at 7:00 PM on TVA Sports and Sportsnet and I’ll be back with my thoughts afterwards, in the meantime, enjoy the long-awaited return of our Habitants!
