Never in Doubt (Canadiens)

For the first time since January 21 to 28, the Canadiens have won 3 games in a row and no-one can say they were playing against a tired team tonight. While the Sens still sit last in the North division, they are a much-improved version of the team we saw at the start of the season. It really didn’t show tonight though, the outcome of the game was never in doubt and the Habs picked up another 2 points with a 4-1 win.

Tonight, the Tatar-Danault-Gallagher line put in another great display. It all started when Brendan Gallagher put himself in high gear and beat Thomas Chabot along the boards, from then one, Montreal didn’t look back. Both Gally and Danault found the back of the net and Tatar got himself 2 assists.

Meanwhile, Jake Evans might just have played his most impressive game of the year. He engineered Paul Byron’s shorthanded goal when he acted as a magnet and all the Sens players converged towards him. With perfect timing, he then slid the puck to a free Byron that wasn’t going to miss his chance. Later on, he also created Corey Perry’s goal with a nice bit of stickhandling.

Speaking of Perry, I have to praise him for his intelligence on the ice. There’s something I never thought I’d write when he played for other teams and multiplied the questionable hits and provocation against the Habs. There’s a player who’s aware that he’s older and doesn’t have the speed he once had and plays accordingly. He’s always aware on the ice and never goes deep when he thinks he might get caught out.

Props also to Jonathan Drouin, he might now have made it on the scoresheet, but no one can deny how involved he is in the game. The forechecking, the puck battles and even the odd hit here and there, it’s really nice to see.

Solid game for Victor Mete as well, who made a key play at the offensive blue line which eventually lead to Perry’s goal. The communication on the ice with Alexander Romanov is also much better than it was, and for now at least, Mete has booked his place on the third pairing. Things may very well change when Chiarot is back, but before then, Mete must make the most of this opportunity.

Finally, Jake Allen got some offensive support from his teammates, he signed his first win since February 6th and would more than likely have had a shutout if Lehkonen didn’t take a penalty with 2 minutes to go. Allen faced 23 shots tonight, most of which weren’t very challenging. Overall, the Canadiens’ collective play was much better, they only committed 6 giveaways tonight, only one of which was signed by a defenseman.

The Habs will now head back to Montreal and they will face the Senators again on Saturday night. Mr. Saturday night should be back in net by then and I don’t expect to see any other line-up changes. Ducharme keeps saying that Toffoli will be back soon, but it seems unlikely to happen before he’s taken part in a full practice. As for Armia, he’s still on the Covid list, and even if he came off the list, does anyone really miss him?

Pour la première fois depuis les 21 au 28 janvier, les Canadiens ont remporté 3 matchs consécutifs et personne ne peut dire qu’ils affrontaient une équipe fatiguée ce soir. Bien que les Sénateurs soient toujours bons derniers dans la division Nord, il se sont beaucoup améliorée comparativement à  l’équipe que l’on a vu en début de saison. Toutefois, ils n’en on pas eu l’air ce soir, il n’y avait aucun doute quant à  l’issue du match et le CH a ramassé un gros 2 points avec une Victoire de 4-1.

Ce soir, le trio Tatar-Danault-Gallagher a encore livré une belle performance. Tout a commencé lorsque Brendan Gallagher s’est mis en haute vitesse et a battu Thomas Chabot pour une rondelle le long de la bande. à partir de ce moment-là , Montréal n’a jamais regardé en arrière. Tant Gally que Danault ont trouvé le fond du filet pendant que Tatar a ajouté 2 passes à  sa fiche.

Pendant ce temps, Jake Evans a peut-être joué son match le plus impressionnant de la saison. Il a été l’architecte du but en infériorité numérique de Paul Byron alors qu’il a agi comme un aimant, forçant les joueurs des Sens à  venir vers lui, avant de glisser la rondelle à  un Byron libre comme l’air. Ce dernier n’allait pas rater telle occasion, surtout que la passe est venue juste au bon moment. Plus tard, Evans a également été le principal artisan du but de Corey Perry grâce à  son maniement de rondelle.

Parlant de Perry, je me dois de lui rendre hommage pour son intelligence sur la glace. Voilà  une phrase que je n’aurais jamais pensé écrire quand il jouait pour d’autres équipes et enchaînait les coups douteux et les provocations face aux Habs. Clairement, Perry est parfaitement conscient du fait qu’il a vieilli, qu’il n’a plus sa vitesse d’antan et qui ajuste son jeu en conséquence. Il ne se commet jamais profondément en zone adverse lorsqu’il y a une chance qu’il se fasse prendre.

Un bon mot pour Jonathan Drouin aussi, bien qu’il n’ait pas noircit la feuille de pointage, personne ne peut nier son implication dans le match. L’échec avant, les batailles pour la rondelle et même les mises en échec ici et là , c’est beau à  voir.

Un match solide également pour Victor Mete, il a fait un jeu clé en gardant la rondelle en zone offensive qui a mené éventuellement au but de Perry. La communication avec Alexander Romanov s’est également améliorée et, pour l’instant du moins, il a solidifié sa place sur le 3e duo de défenseurs. Les choses changeront peut-être quand Chiarot sera prêt à  revenir au jeu, mais pour l’instant Mete doit saisir cette chance à  deux mains.

Jake Allen a finalement reçu l’apport offensif qu’il méritait de ses coéquipiers, signant son premier gain depuis le 6 février et il aurait probablement eu un jeu blanc n’eut été de la pénalité prise par Lehkonen à  moins de 2 minutes de la fin. Il a fait face à  23 tirs, pour la plupart pas très menaçant. Dans l’ensemble, le jeu collectif du CH a été bien meilleur, les joueurs n’ont commis que 6 revirements ce soir, et seulement l’un d’eux provenait du bâton d’un défenseur.

Les Habs retourneront maintenant à  Montréal et ils affronteront de nouveau les Sénateurs samedi soir. M. samedi soir devrait alors retrouver son filet et je ne m’attends pas à  voir d’autres changements à  la formation. Ducharme continue de répéter que Toffoli reviendra sous peu, mais ce serait surprenant que ça arrive avant qu’il ait participé à  une vraie pratique. Quant à  Armia, il est toujours sur la liste du protocole de Covid, et même s’il ne l’était plus, est-ce que quelqu’un s’en ennui vraiment?
