The Predators closed out the preseason schedule yesterday with a solid overtime matinee win over the Carolina Hurricanes. Nashville got two power play goals from Craig Smith, a sweet breakaway goal from Kevin Fiala and two more goals from Ryan Johansen, including the game winner just 21 seconds into overtime.
Head coach Peter Laviolette was much happier with the Predators compete level, so the team obviously got the message from Wednesday’s post-loss practice. It was a solid effort with some very nice power play work, but there are still a few things to work on… penalties being one of them. Something the coach called out post-game, "Penalties are still a problem for me, but we'll talk about these things, get in front of the group and we'll be ready to go to New York."
Nashville will take today off as the NHL begins the Global Series. The New Jersey Devils will take on SC Bern in Switzerland. The Preds need to be down to their 23 man roster by the league deadline which is tomorrow at 4pm.
The Predators are currently carrying 26 players on the roster, that includes Austin Watson who will not count toward the 23 man roster during his 27 game suspension and there are rumors flying that Ryan Hartman may be placed on IR, so (if true) that would leave one player to be sent down.
Stay tuned…
Oh and BTW… the NHL has released their Stanley Cup predictions and man… has that staff drank the San Jose Sharks Kool-Aid. Seven of the 18 members of their panel picked the Sharks to win the Cup. Heck, even the acquisition of John Tavares didn’t drive the same in the East, where Tampa is picked to win the East by 13 of the 18 panelists with six picking the Bolts to win the Cup. Toronto is only picked by a few to even win their division.
In this case… I will claim to be from Missouri… you gotta show me some before I go that far.
As far as Nashville goes, the overwhelming sentiment is that they will finish 2nd in the Central as 11 of the 18 slotted the Preds there. Four predicted the Predators will repeat as Central Division champs and three writers chose them to finish third in the division. Three of the panel choose them as the Western Conference champ and 2 chose them as the eventual Cup champ with Filip Forsberg being named the Conn Snythe.
Four different teams were predicted to win the Cup… the others were Tamps (six selections), Nashville (two) and a single vote for Pittsburgh. Interesting that neither Washington nor Vegas were predicted to reach the Final again, and one panelist had the stones to predict that Vegas won’t make the playoffs!
I love prediction season!

Random Notes
- Scott Hartnell announced his retirement today... I was so glad he was able to finish his career in Nashville.
- Sheesh, after signing a simply silly contract… Tom Wilson of the Capitals broke stupid again last night… in person disciplinary hearing is coming and the NHL Player’s Assistance Fund will be getting another substantial contribution because of Wilson’s uncontrolled play.
- Preseason is basically done, except for the two exhibition games in Europe.
- Thanks to everyone who came out to make PredsFest 2018 such a roaring success. We had a blast in Walk of Fame park!
- Congratulations to Shea Weber, who has been named captain of the Montreal Candiens.
