The New York Islanders dropped their second game of the preseason yesterday in a 3-1 loss to the New York Rangers. Here are some thoughts on the game.
It comes as no surprise that Jordan Eberle had the Islanders goal on an assist from Mathew Barzal. The two have been clicking all preseason and have arguably been New York’s two best players thus far.

I’ve said it before but Oliver Wahlstrom’s shot is something else. His release is effortless and while he may not be NHL ready quite yet, his shot sure it. He does still need to get a bit more comfortable with the puck at the NHL level but he was using his body and has been performing well overall. Speaking of wingers, Josh Ho-Sang looked good too. Not great but certainly good enough to make for a tough decision on Islanders’ management. Anthony Beauvillier has seemed more involved than last year and is getting shots from good locations. I’m predicting a bit of a breakthrough year with him.
Thomas Greiss played very well. He made some really good saves that required quick reactions and cross-crease movement but handled it really well. He was visibly frustrated after the first goal but can’t be faulted for either of the two.
Lastly, the more Noah Dobson plays, the more he looks like an NHL player. It’s not a matter of just fitting in, he’s a contributing member of the team and seems to be getting really comfortable with being able to make plays in the offensive zone. If I’m making a prediction, he makes the team.
