The New York Islanders had their four-game winning streak snapped last night, falling 3-1 to the Philadelphia Flyers.
Ross Johnston came into the lineup, as Josh Bailey ended up sitting out with an upper-body injury.

Then after the Flyers took a couple of penalties, New York opened the scoring on an early 5-on-3, as Noah Dobson wired a shot from the point that beat Carter Hart. However, the Flyers responded with a shorthanded goal right away as their second penalty was expiring, with the puck taking a wild redirection on a broken rush play and getting past Ilya Sorokin. Then about five minutes later, Kevin Hayes ripped a shot over Sorokin right off the faceoff, giving the Flyers a 2-1 lead. We saw the frame slow down from there with less action (up until a scrum right at the end of the period).
It wasn’t an overly eventful second frame, but the Islanders did start to generate the majority of the shots as the period went on. However, Ilya Sorokin had to make a couple solid saves off a few late chances, and New York remained down through 40 minutes.
The Islanders then had a really hard time getting anything going in the third period. They did manage some late shots but they weren’t able to sustain a ton of pressure or generate many chances, as Kevin Hayes buried an empty netter for a 3-1 Flyers win.
After the early excitement wore off, the Islanders really didn’t put together an overly strong game. They had a good start in the first few minutes but once Philadelphia tied it early, the Islanders’ momentum died pretty quickly.
They did score another goal on the power play, which has been working well for them this year, but they really weren’t generating a ton of high-danger opportunities at even strength and ended the game with only 24 shots.
Cal Clutterbuck also exited the game late in the first period, and there’s been no update since.
It’s a bit of a missed opportunity to take points against a weaker team dealing with injuries, riding a really long losing streak. New York looked a bit flat and especially as a team that has been great in the third period, they didn’t make much of a push to get back into the game late.
They’ll be back in action on Friday, when they face the Nashville Predators.
