The New York Islanders suffered their second loss in a row last night, falling 5-2 to the Dallas Stars.

Josh Bailey re-entered the lineup in place of Ross Johnston, while Semyon Varlamov got the start in goal.

The Islanders started pretty strong early in the first period, generating some chances. That said, Dallas did start to respond as the frame went along and ended up outshooting New York, but the game remained scoreless through 20 minutes.

The Islanders opened the scoring early in the second period, as Oliver Wahlstrom was able to win a battle and get the puck to Alexander Romanov, whose shot was deflected in by Mathew Barzal. Dallas tied it soon after though when the Islanders gave up an easy zone entry to Jamie Benn. Benn got the puck over the Tyler Seguin, who put a quick pass out front to Radek Faksa to beat Semyon Varlamov, tying the game.

However, Barzal struck once again for the Islanders later in the frame on a power play, taking a pass from Brock Nelson and heading to the net to put a low shot past Jake Oettinger. Dallas drew even once again though only 40 seconds later, as Benn got a pass to Mason Marchment in a good spot and he was able to beat Varlamov.

Dallas then took the lead partway through the third period, with a puck getting out front to Benn, who backhanded a perfect shot over Varlamov. As the period continued, the Islanders had their chances, including a puck that was swept off the goal line by Ryan Suter, before Jason Robertson scored later off a faceoff to double the lead. Jani Hakanpaa then added an empty netter, as the Stars took a 5-2 win.

It marks the second straight loss for the Islanders, though they did put together a decent game overall.

Other than maybe the back half of the first period where Dallas took over a bit, the Islanders were getting their chances. They were playing on the road against a good team and it’s a matter of one play making the difference, where Ryan Suter swept the puck off the line to prevent the tying goal then Dallas ended up extending the lead shortly after.

Barzal’s goals in the second period also marked his first and second goals of the season. While he has been good this year, it’s a positive to finally see Barzal get on the board with a goal of his own.

It was a competitive game, just one where the Islanders came up short. They’ll close out their road trip tomorrow night against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
