The New York Islanders shut out the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday, coming away with a 3-0 win.
With Kyle Palmieri day-to-day with an upper-body injury, Simon Holmstrom made his NHL debut.
The Islanders outshot the Oilers in the opening frame but did still give up some good chances, though Ilya Sorokin made some key saves, notably one on Zach Hyman. Neither team was able to capitalize, as they went to intermission scoreless.
New York got on the board five minutes into the second frame, as Zach Parise and Jean-Gabriel Pageau went down ice on a shorthanded rush, with Parise feeding Pageau in front for the first goal of the game. Then only two minutes later, New York ended up with a power play after some 4-on-4 time and Pageau struck once again, as his cross-crease pass went in off Evan Bouchard’s stick. New York wasn’t done there and before the end of the frame, Oliver Wahlstrom found Sebastian Aho in front who scored, extending the lead again. Despite giving up 17 shots in the period, the Islanders took a 3-0 lead to the intermission.
The Islanders got into penalty trouble in the third period, giving up three power plays. They ended up giving up a huge 23 shots in the frame, but Sorokin held strong, taking a 3-0 win.
Obviously, the Islanders were outplayed through a lot of the game and gave up a ton of chances. However, Ilya Sorokin came up big, stopping all 49 shots and proving why he’s one of the league’s best goalies.
The penalty kill was also key for New York, killing off all five of Edmonton’s man advantages. At a 84 per cent success rate, the Islanders' penalty kill is holding solid, ranking third in the NHL.
Simon Holmstrom got a good opportunity, playing with Mathew Barzal and Oliver Wahlstrom. He didn’t manage any shots on goal but it was good to see him get into action with the Islanders.
It marks the Islanders’ second win in a row, improving to a 13-8-0 record. Their next game comes on Friday, when they face the Columbus Blue Jackets.
