The Carolina Hurricanes came up short against the Calgary Flames tonight, falling 3-2 in overtime.

The Hurricanes struck early, with Sebastian Aho blowing by Noah Hanifin on a rush and beating Jacob Markstrom under two minutes into the game, to put Carolina ahead. The Hurricanes continued to press through the first half of the frame afterwards and after sustaining pressure near the halfway mark, Calvin de Haan threw the puck on goal, beating Markstrom (who had lost his stick) to put Carolina up 2-0. The Flames did respond about three minutes later to cut the lead in half, with Nazem Kadri burying a rebound on a power play, but it was still a solid period for the Hurricanes, as they took a 2-1 lead to the intermission.
The Flames tied the game early in the second period though, on a pretty brutal goal for Antti Raanta to give up, as Brett Ritchie just threw the puck on net from the corner and it found its way in. Calgary went on to dominate the frame, outshooting Carolina by a huge 14-2 margin, but weren’t able to pull ahead. It then looked like the Hurricanes had taken the lead with under 10 seconds to go in the second when the Flames couldn’t clear the zone and Derek Stepan scored in front, but the goal was called back for offside.
The Hurricanes had great opportunities to regain the lead in the third period, with six minutes of power play time. However, they weren’t able to convert and after outshooting Calgary 12-8 in the frame, the game remained even and continued to overtime.
The Hurricanes were under siege for a good portion of the extra frame, with Raanta being forced to make some good saves. However, with about 30 seconds to go in overtime, Rasmus Andersson found Tyler Toffoli in front, who one-timed a shot past Raanta to win it for Calgary.
Carolina started really strong with a great first period in this one, but couldn’t keep the momentum going. Then having the power play chances they did but going 0-for-4 overall was tough to see.
At least Carolina got a point here but blowing the lead on route to a loss is pretty disappointing. That said, they do face the winless Vancouver Canucks on Monday – if they’re able to pick up a win there, they’ll still come away from their Western road trip with seven of a possible 10 points.
