The Carolina Hurricanes came up short against the Winnipeg Jets last night, falling 4-3 in overtime.

Then after a pretty fast-paced start to the second period, the Jets extended their lead about seven minutes into the frame, with Michael Eyssimont burying a rebound after Kochetkov had stopped David Gustafsson on a breakaway. Carolina did outshoot Winnipeg 11-8 in the frame, but ended up giving up a lot of quality chances.
Josh Morrissey made it a 3-0 game early in the third period, somehow sneaking a shot right through Kochetkov on a rush. The Hurricanes did do a good job limiting any more offense from the Jets as the period went on though and ended up pulling the goalie very early.
With the extra attacker, Carolina got on the board with just under five minutes to go, as Jaccob Slavin scored off a shot through traffic. Then with the goalie still pulled, Andrei Svechnikov made it a 3-2 game, deflecting in a point shot from Brent Burns. The Hurricanes weren’t done there and with just 39 seconds to go, Martin Necas threw a long-range shot on net and it somehow beat Rittich, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra frame though, Pierre-Luc Dubois hit Josh Morrissey with a great stretch pass to send him in on a breakaway and Morrissey beat Kochetkov, winning it for the Jets.
While it was a really good effort to battle back from the large deficit, it’s tough to call it a good game overall.
The Hurricanes did limit the Jets to only 23 shots but they also ended up giving up a lot of quality chances. Carolina gave up several breakaways and odd-man rushes and so even though the number of shots against was low, it doesn’t reflect a somewhat inconsistent effort defensively.
It also marks the team’s third straight loss, though they have picked up a point in each one of them. We’re continuing to see the lack of offense being an issue, and even while Carolina did end up with three goals in the last five minutes, they also couldn’t get on the board for the other 55 minutes. Carolina has scored just 10 goals over their last five games and sit 25th in the NHL in goals per game, after ranking ninth last season.
On another note though, it was interesting to see Kochetkov get his second straight start. Obviously, there’s already lots of trust in him.
The Hurricanes will be back in action tomorrow, when they face the Arizona Coyotes.
