The Carolina Hurricanes are reportedly closing in on an AHL affiliation with the Chicago Wolves.
According to Luke DeCock of the Raleigh News & Observer, the Hurricanes aren't likely to maintain their partnership with the Charlotte Checkers next season. It may seem like an odd decision to strike a deal with the Wolves, as Charlotte to Carolina is a quick trip for players going back and forth. It also means that any Hurricanes fans who may have been willing to make a drive to Charlotte to check out their AHL team won’t have that opportunity.
The Hurricanes and Checkers have had their relationship deteriorate though and the Wolves would pay more in affiliation fees, according to DeCock. The Checkers have been Carolina’s affiliate for a decade now and it makes it all the more bittersweet that they're the reigning AHL champions. Haydn Fleury, Warren Foegele and Martin Necas are three notable Checkers alumni on Carolina's roster.
As reported by to DeCock, however, the door would be open for the Hurricanes to resume their relationship with the Checkers somewhere down the road.
