Once again, I'll be going over the week’s poll results and providing some thoughts on how they turned out. Here's this week’s Poll Review.

QUESTION: This season, James Reimer:

(Votes: 61)

Exceeded your expectations: 62%
Met your expectations: 36%
Didn’t meet your expectations: 2%

Reimer was a very solid backup for the Hurricanes, so it's not a surprise to see 98 per cent of voters say he at least met their expectations. That said, I still wouldn’t hold my breath on him repeating this success next year, based on his inconsistency between seasons. As for this year though, he probably did exceed what most people would have expected from him.

QUESTION: Does Jaccob Slavin’s contract bring the most value per dollar of any contract on the Hurricanes’ payroll?

(Votes: 46)

Yes: 89%
No: 11%

This was way more lopsided than I expected. To me, it’s a pretty tough debate between Slavin’s contract, Teuvo Teravainen’s contract and even Brett Pesce’s to an extent. I think I say "yes" here, just based on how rare it is to get a true top-pair defenseman who comes at that price with that term, but it’s really close.

QUESTION: If the Hurricanes are granted a compliance buyout, do they use it on Jordan Staal?

(Votes: 86)

Yes: 59%
No: 41%

This one was difficult. On one hand, it’s tough to lose a captain and while he’s not worth his contract, he’s still a solid member of Carolina’s bottom-six. He provides leadership and the Hurricanes aren’t in immediate need of cap space. On the other, if they don’t use the compliance buyout now and he declines further, the Hurricanes will be kicking themselves. I think there’s also a difference between “should” they use it and “will” they. I think they probably should but I don’t know that they necessarily will.

QUESTION: What is your early prediction for Andrei Svechnikov’s contract AAV (based on a six-year deal)?

(Votes: 143)

$7-8M: 44%
$8-9M: 34%
$9-10M: 12%
Under $7M: 6%
Over $10M: 4%

While it’s unlikely Svechnikov ends up with a deal that length for either under $7M or over $10M, the deal will be significantly impacted by how he performs next season. I’ll say my guess is actually probably somewhere between $8-9M but if he takes another big step in his development, it’s possible he could jump into the $9M range. I’ll do an article diving much deeper into this at some point this summer.

QUESTION: Would you prefer to have Svechnikov/Aho/Teravainen together long-term or move one off the line to spread out scoring?

(Votes: 66)

Play them together: 74%
Spread out the scoring: 26%

I tend to agree, based on how dominant the line was. That said, if the Hurricanes hadn’t acquired Trocheck at the trade deadline, my answer may be different going into next year, due to Carolina’s lack of secondary scoring. However, with Trocheck in as a second-line center and Martin Necas likely to take another step in his development, keeping the top line together is probably the best route to go.

QUESTION: If the season is cancelled, do you think Justin Williams returns next year to make one more run at a Cup?

(Votes: 55)

Yes: 71%
No: 29%

I’d like to think this would be the case but who really knows? The point is, Williams returned to try to win a Cup and may not get that opportunity now, so yeah, there’s probably a chance he’d return once more to wrap up his career with a playoff run. But again, it’s all speculation.

Check back tomorrow for a player profile on Trevor van Riemsdyk (and a new poll)!
