The Carolina Hurricanes bounced back after a bad loss to the New York Islanders on Friday, picking up a key overtime win against the Philadelphia Flyers last night.
The Hurricanes were facing Tony DeAngelo, who spent last year with Carolina before being traded to Philadelphia this summer. It also marked Jordan Staal’s 1100th NHL game.

Philalpahia got one back early in the second period though, with Lukas Sedlak finding Nicolas Deslauriers in front, who beat Antti Raanta. Then only two minutes later, Travis Konecny got a pass to Owen Tippett on a power play, who slid the puck through Raanta to tie the game. The teams exchanged some good chances after that and while the Hurricanes took four penalties in the frame, they still outshot Philadelphia, and the game remained tied through 40 minutes.
The Flyers started to generate the better chances in the early part of the third period though and about six minutes into the frame, Sedlak put a pass to Wade Allison in front who buried it, giving Philadelphia their first lead. The Hurricanes didn’t manage to create a ton of opportunities after that and it looked like they could fall short, but with only about two minutes to go, Martin Necas made a great individual effort to get to a loose puck in the neutral zone, then enter the Flyers’ end and wire a shot past Hart, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, the Flyers had some great early chances courtesy of Travis Konecny but Raanta came up with some big saves. Then with under a minute left in overtime, Martin Necas was able to control the puck and got it to Sebastian Aho, whose quick pass set up Brent Burns for a great one-timer, winning the game for Carolina.
Despite the fact the Hurricanes blew a two-goal lead, it was still an important win, following their tough loss against the Islanders. They managed to put together a pretty good game on the road in second half of a back-to-back against a team who’s off to a great start to the season.
Martin Necas is also on fire to start the year, with five goals and 11 points through the first eight games of the year. Necas is tremendously talented, with great speed, a dangerous shot and good vision, he just hasn’t always been able to put it together consistently. This season though, he’s driving a lot more offense on his own and looks to be playing with a lot of confidence.
It was also an interesting matchup just in the fact that the Hurricanes were facing Tony DeAngelo, who they traded this summer, before acquiring Brent Burns. While trading DeAngelo after the season he had seemed like a questionable call, Burns has had a big impact with Carolina. He’s not going to be perfect defensively, but there’s no denying the impact he’s had in providing offense from the blue line, with the game winner yesterday being proof of that.
The Hurricanes will be back in action tomorrow, when they host the Washington Capitals.
