The Carolina Hurricanes came up short against the Minnesota Wild yesterday, falling 2-1 in overtime.

A pretty low-event second period followed, without a ton of action. Pyotr Kochetkov was solid and made some difficult stops but for the most part, the Hurricanes did a good job shutting down offense from Minnesota.
Carolina really couldn’t get much offense going in the third period, but still only surrendered six shots against in the frame. However, Minnesota pressed late and with under three minutes to go, the puck got out to Sam Steel in front, who beat Kochetkov to tie the game, sending it to overtime.
Then in the extra frame, Steel found Alex Goligoski driving to the net for a pass and Goligoski was able to beat Kochetkov, giving the Wild the extra point
It was a great defensive effort for the Hurricanes, allowing only 19 shots in regulation. On the flip side though, Carolina got almost no offense going in the back 40 minutes, registering just 10 shots between the second and third periods.
The Hurricanes continue to get essentially no secondary offense and are relying entirely on their top three forwards in Sebastian Aho, Martin Necas and Andrei Svechnikov to produce for them. Right now, Jordan Martinook is fourth amongst Hurricanes’ forwards in points – and no disrespect to Martinook (who’s a valuable bottom-six forward), but adding offense really isn’t even his main attribute in the lineup. The team’s young forwards aren’t taking a step, with Jesperi Kotkaniemi having managed a brutal three points over 18 games, while Seth Jarvis doesn’t have a point in his last seven games. Paul Stastny is also certainly falling short of expectations so far.
On the bright side, despite a minimal workload, Kochetkov looked good again in the loss. Through three games this year, he continues to look pretty ready for a full-time NHL role.
Carolina will be back in action tomorrow, when they face the Winnipeg Jets.
