Perhaps we’re now getting so used to seeing the Habs lose that it’s now getting easier to identify positives in losses or maybe it’s just that it was so obvious tonight that Cayden Primeau felt comfortable out there and that, is a very good news for the Montreal Canadiens. I’ve said it in my last blog, the Price and Weber core is almost a thing of the past and when Carey Price retires, someone else will have to take over the toughest job in hockey as the Montreal Canadiens’ number 1 goaltender. When we saw Cayden Primeau at camp, he didn’t look like he was ready to step up, but his performance tonight was very reassuring. Losing 3-2 to the Rangers in New York is nothing to be ashamed of, and Primeau saved 31 of the 34 shots he faced for a .912 save percentage. In the first period alone, he faced 16 shots, sending the message that he was ready to seize this opportunity and he sure did seize it.
Still in the positive column, Christian Dvorak finally scored his 2nd goal of the season and even added an assist on Josh Anderson’s goal, some much needed offensive production from the top-6 players. That’s 7 points on the season for the miscast 2nd line center, nothing to write home about I guess but hey, he’s got as many goals as Jesperi Kotkaniemi’s got in Carolina and 4 more points, so there is that. I think it’s also worth mentioning that Michael Pezzetta showed he feared no one tonight when he invited Ryan Reaves to dance after the big forward landed a big hit on him. Pezzetta might not have won the fight, but he at least showed that he wasn’t going to be intimidated. Tonight, also marked Jonathan Drouin’s return to action and he did look comfortable out there, taking 4 shots on net and getting some very good looks.
However, a loss is a loss and there were also plenty of negatives on display tonight. I think this might have been one of Nick Suzuki’s worst games defensively speaking as he was directly responsible for 2 of the Rangers’ goals and ended his night with a -3 rating, but he’s still young, learning and that’s just fine. Brendan Gallagher losing it in the dying minute wasn’t his finest hour either, but let’s be honest, the Canadiens really weren’t looking like they were going to tie this thing up…at least this way, Gallagher got to let off some steam, I guess.
Tonight, Mike Hoffman missed another game, and it was announced earlier today that he had been put on the injured reserve and would miss at least a week of action. Meanwhile, Marc Bergevin put Adam Brooks on waivers and considering how thin the team is at center, it says a lot. If you want to see the bright side of it though, it probably means that the Habs are happy with what Ryan Poehling has shown since being called up. On Thursday, the Habs will host Croby and his Pens in Montreal before welcoming the Preds on Saturday, hopefully, we’ll be able to identify some bright spots in those games as well.

Peut-être que nous sommes maintenant tellement habitués de voir le CH baisser pavillon que ça devient de plus en plus facile de repérer des côtés positifs dans les défaites ou peut-être est-ce simplement parce que c’était tellement évident que Cayden Primeau avait l’air confortable devant la cage du CH, ce qui représente une excellent nouvelle pour le CH. Je l’ai dit dans mon dernier blogue, l’époque du noyau Price/Petry est presque chose du passé et quand Carey Price prendra sa retraite, quelqu’un devra prendre sa place et occuper le poste de gardien numéro 1. Quand nous avons vu Cayden Primeau au camp, il n’a pas eu l’air d’être prêt à franchir une autre étape vers la LNH, mais sa performance ce soir a été des plus rassurante. Perdre 3-2 contre les Rangers à New York n’est pas gênant, et Primeau a arrêté 31 des 34 tirs auxquels il a fait face, pour un pourcentage d’efficacité de .912. Lors du premier 20 seulement, il a fait face à 16 lancers, envoyant un message clair à l’effet qu’il était prêt pour ce match.
Toujours dans la colonne des positifs, Christian Dvorak a finalement marqué son 2e but de la saison et a même ajouté une passe sur le but de Josh Anderson, enfin une contribution offensive du top 6. à‡a donne 7 points à Dvorak depuis le début de la saison pour le 2e centre qui n’occupe définitivement pas le bon rôle. Rien pour écrire à sa mère me direz-vous, mais c’est quand même un pas dans la bonne direction et pour la petite histoire, il a le même nombre de buts qu’un certain Jesperi Kotkaniemi et 4 points de plus. Toujours du point de vue positif : Michael Pezzetta a démontré à tout le monde qu’il ne craignait pas d’affronter les durs de durs. Il n’a pas gagné son combat contre Ryan Reaves, mais il a au moins démontré qu’il n’allait pas être intimidé. Ce soir, Jonathan Drouin a également renoué avec l’action et il avait l’air confortable sur le jeu, prenant 4 lancers et ayant quelques belles chances.
Cependant, une défaite reste une défaite et il y avait aussi beaucoup de négatif à voir ce soir. Je crois que ce match a probablement été un des pires matchs de Nick Suzuki au point de vue défensif puisqu’il a été directement responsable de 2 buts des Rangers et a terminé sa soirée avec un différentiel de -3, mais il est encore jeune et il apprend, c’est la vie. Brian Gallagher a également perdu son sang-froid dans la dernière minute du match et ce n’était définitivement pas l’un de ses meilleurs moments, mais soyons honnêtes, les Canadiens ne semblaient vraiment pas sur le point de créer l’égalité de toute façon…au moins comme ça, Gallagher a pu évacuer un peu de frustration je suppose.
Ce soir, Mike Hoffman a raté un autre match et le CH a annoncé plus tôt aujourd’hui qu’il serait à l’écart pour au moins une semaine. Pendant ce temps, Marc Bergevin a soumis Adam Brooks au ballotage et considérant à quel point la profondeur au centre est problématique chez le CH, ça signifie probablement que les Habs sont satisfaits de ce qu’ils ont vu de Poehling depuis son rappel. Jeudi, le CH accueillera les Penguins et Sidney Crosby avant de voir les Prédateurs débarquer en ville samedi, espérons que nous pourrons identifier des points positifs dans ces matchs également.
