The 2017-2018 season was not great by any means for the Canadiens, with 71 points, they finished the season 6th in the Atlantic division and missed the playoffs, but even when they have a bad season, they still celebrate their fans during the last home game. What does that entail? Well, mostly contests, discounts and the “get a jersey off a player’s back… program. You’ve probably seen it, at the end of the game, lucky fans who were randomly selected make their way onto the ice to receive the jersey a player has worn during the game. I never was lucky enough to be one of those fans, not yet anyways, but on April 3rd, 2018 I attended Fan Appreciation night in a skybox free of charge.
The week before the game, Club 1909 ran a contest where all you had to do was buy a participation with Club 1909 to run the chance to win 4 tickets in a skybox for the last home game of the year, on top of that, all food and soft drinks where included in the prize. To be honest I thought “meh, what are the odds of actually winning?…, but I still got a single entry for the draw and lo and behold, a couple of hours later, my phone rang. “Hi Karine, it’s Eugène from Club 1909 how are you doing?… “Pretty good can’t complain really… “Well, you’re about to feel even better! You just won 4 tickets in a Skybox for Fan Appreciation night!…. And feel even better I did! The timing couldn’t have been better, a few weeks back, my nephew who had just turned 8 told me that he’d love to go to a game at the Bell Centre, so I knew just who to bring.
That’s how the little man got to experience his first game at the Bell Centre in style! There’s something magical about sharing that kind of first experience with a kid. Kids are special, they’re not jaded yet, they look at everything with enthusiasm and they don’t try to play it cool, you can see how happy they are. Since I knew how much he would enjoy it, I chose my parents as the two other guests so that they could share that feeling with the eldest grandchild and it was the right call. From the moment we arrived in Montreal, Cedric was running everywhere and pointing at everything, from the numerous statues right by the Bell Centre, to the size of the Jumbotron and how hard the players shot the pucks in warm-up, everything was a big deal for him.
As luck would have it, that was also the night on which Carey Price passed Jacques Plante for most games played by a Habs’ goaltender. While the Canadiens ended up losing the game 5-4 in OT, it was a rather entertaining affair and the ovation Price received when they showed his tribute video was breathtaking, especially for an 8 years-old kid who had never been in such a huge venue. The look on Carey Price’s face as he was overcome by this demonstration of love was brilliant and the Habs’ netminder cool as ice exterior melted there for a couple of minutes. That’s how a simple stroke of luck became a night to remember, not only for me but for my nephew who received one of the best baptism by fire ever, it’s definitely right up there in my list of Habs’ memories.
La semaine avant le match, le Club 1909 avait fait un concours o๠tout ce qu’il fallait faire pour gagner était d’acheter des billets pour le tirage avec nos points Club 1909 pour remporter 4 billets dans une loge pour le dernier match à domicile de la saison avec nourriture et breuvages inclus. Pour être honnête je me suis dit : “bah, c’est quoi les chances de gagner?…, mais j’ai quand même acheté un seul billet et contre toute attente, environ 2 heures après. Mon téléphone sonnait. “Bonjour Karine, c’est Eugène du Club 1909, ç ava bien?… “Oui ç ava, je ne peux pas me plaindre… “Eh bien tu es sur le bord d’aller encore mieux comme tu as gagné 4 billets dans une loge pour la soirée des partisans!… Le timing n’aurait pas pu être meilleur, quelques semaines avant, mon neveu m’avait dit qu’il aimerait vraiment aller voir un match au Centre Bell, alors je savais déjà qui amener.
C’est comme ça que le kid a pu vivre son premier match au Centre Bell en grand. Il y a quelque chose de magique à partager ce genre d’expérience avec un enfant. Les enfants sont spéciaux, ils ne sont pas désillusionnés encore, ils voient tout avec enthousiasme et ils ne tentent pas de le cacher, on peut clairement voir à quel point ils sont heureux. Comme je savais à quel point il allait apprécier la soirée, j’ai pensé que ce serait bien qu’il puisse partager ce moment avec ses grands-parents et j’ai donc décidé de donner les deux autres billets à mes parents. Dès le moment o๠nous sommes arrivés à Montréal, Cedric courrait partout en pointant tout, des statues à côté du Centre Bell, au format du tableau indicateur en passant par les puissants lancers des joueurs pendant le réchauffement, tout était digne de mention pour lui.
Coup de chance, cette soirée était également le match dans lequel Carey Price a dépassé Jacques Plante en termes de matchs disputes en carrière par un gardien avec le Tricolore. Même si le CH a fini par perdre 5-4 en prolongation, c’était un match électrisant et l’ovation reçu par Price après le vidéo hommage était à couper le souffle pour un mini partisan de 8 ans. L’expression sur le visage de Price alors que cette vague d’amour déferlait sur lui était également magique et l’extérieur du gardien habituellement de glace a fondu pendant quelques minutes. C’est ainsi qu’un simple coup de chance s’est transformé en une soirée mémorable et que mon neveu a reçu son baptême du feu, ça fait définitivement parti de mes plus beaux souvenirs de la Sainte-Flanelle.
