As I’ve said before, of all the teams in the NHL there isn’t a single one I hate as much as I hate Boston. I don’t know why, it’s just the way it is and it will always be. Thankfully, it’s quite obvious that a lot of the players on both teams feel that exact same hate for the other franchise. That’s probably why every single playoffs series between these 2 original 6 teams is so exciting. So far, they’ve crossed paths in the playoffs 34 times. Montreal has won 25 times and Boston 9 times. The Bruins’ latest triumph came in 2011 on their way to claiming Lord Stanley’s Cup, that one stung. The last time they met though, the Canadiens came out on top and that’s no doubt one of my favourite playoff series ever.
That series was such a rollercoaster! At times, the goalies were stealing the show with both Rask and Price getting a shutout during the series, but there were also some high scoring exciting affairs and a couple of overtime thrillers. Game 1 was won 4-3 in double OT by the Habs after Subban scored his second goal of the game with a slapper on the power play. In Game 2, I remember the Habs being up 3-1 with less than 15 minutes to go and thinking “oh my god, we’re going to go up 2-0 against Boston IN Boston!…, but then the Bruins stormed back with 4 consecutive goals to take game 2, 5-3. Game 3 at the Bell Centre was a great one! Plekanec opened the score with an easy goal thanks to a brilliant slap pass from Vanek, Subban scored his 3rd goal in 2 games with Weise and Eller also scoring in the 4-2 win. In game 4, Tuukka Rask was flawless, stopping all 33 shots while Carey Price only let in the 1 goal in overtime, but just like that the series was tied. In game 5, the Bruins won 4-2 and took the lead in the series for the first time. In the loss, Subban scored once again and Gallagher got his 4th goal of the playoffs. The Canadiens might have been down, but there sure weren’t out. They took game 6 by a score of 4-0 with Vanek scoring twice and Price making 26 saves.
The table was set for game 7 and I’ll never forget what Subban said prior to it: “That’s what playoffs is all about,man. I can’t wait for the crowd, the noise, the energy in the building [in Boston]. I can’t wait to take it all away from them.… Number 76 wouldn’t score in game 7 but he landed 4 hits and had a blast trash talking all game long. While Montreal only shot 18 times to the Bruins’ 30 shots, when the buzzer rang, the score was 3-1 Montreal and the Bruins were bounced off of the playoffs. It’s in the handshake line that night that Milan Lucic told Weise “I’ll ****** kill you next season… before having words with Emelin as well. That’s the kind of thing that makes you hate the Bruins even more (if at all possible), but in the moment, no one cared, Habs nation was just ecstatic to go to Conference final.
I know I was on cloud 9, not only was my team going to the conference final, but I had won the bet against my colleague who’s a Bruins fan and the next day, he was going to be the one to bring in the “Timbits of shame…. That’s our standard bet for every Habs-Bruins match-up, whoever loses threats our department to Timbits the next day, a sure way to make everyone in the office look forward to those games. Of course, these days we couldn’t do that, there’s no sharing food in the Covid era but one day soon, things will be back to normal and we’ll be able to enjoy the simple things in life just like this one.
Cette série a été tout un tour de montagne russes! à certains moments, les gardiens ont excellé alors que Rask et Price ont tous deux obtenus un jeu blanc, mais il y a aussi eu des matchs à haut pointage et deux matchs qui se sont rendus en prolongation. Les Canadiens avaient remporté le premier match 4-3 en deuxième prolongation sur le deuxième but du match de Subban, un lancer frappé sur l’avantage numérique. Dans le deuxième match, je me souviens que le CH menait 3-1 avec moins de 15 minutes à faire et je m’étais dit « mon dieu, on va mener 2-0 sur Boston après 2 matchs à Boston! », mais les Bruins sont revenus de l’arrière avec 4 buts sans réplique pour gagner 5-3. Le 3 match en était un superbe! Plekanec avait ouvert la marque avec un but facile suite à une savante passe/lancer frappé de Vanek, Subban avait marqué son 3e but en 2 matchs alors que Weise et Eller avaient complété la marque. Dans la 4e partie, Rask s’était montré intraitable, arrêtant les 33 tirs du CH pendant que Price ne cèdait qu’une seule fois en prolongation, les Bruins égalant ainsi la série. Dans le 5e match, les Bruins ont gagné 4-2 et pris les devants dans la série pour la première fois. Dans la défaite, Subban avait encore une fois marqué et Gallagher avait marqué son 4e but des séries. Les Canadiens étaient peut-être en retard dans la série, mais ils n’étaient pas vaincus. Ils ont remporté le 6e match par la marque de 4-0 avec 2 buts de Vanek et un jeu blanc de 26 arrêts pour Price.
La table était mise pour le 7e et ultime match et je n’oublierai jamais ce que Subban avait dit: “C’est ça les séries. J’ai hâte de voir la foule, le bruit, l’énergie dans l’aréna [à Boston]. J’ai vraiment hâte de leur enlever tout ça…. Le numéro 76 n’a pas marqué dans le 7e match mais il a servi 4 mises en échec et s’est bien amusé à narguer les joueurs des Bruins. Bien que Montréal n’ait tiré que 18 fois pendant que Boston décrochait 30 tirs, mais à la sirène finale, le score était 3-1 Montréal et les Bruins venaient d’être éliminés. C’est dans la poignée de main qui suivi ce soir-là que Milan Lucic a dit à Weise « Je vais te tuer l’an prochain » avant de s’en prendre verbalement à Emelin. C’est le genre de chose qui nous fait détester Boston encore plus (si c’est possible), mais à ce moment-là , on s’en foutait, tous les fans du CH était en extase parce que leur équipe passait en final d’association.
Je sais que pour ma part, je flottais sur un nuage, non-seulement l’équipe passait en final de conférence, mais je venais de gagner mon pari avec un collègue fan des Bruins et le lendemain, ce serait lui qui devrait amener les « Timbits de la honte ». C’est notre pari standard pour chaque affrontement Montréal-Boston, la personne dont l’équipe perd se doit d’acheter des Timbits pour le département au complet, une excellente façon de s’assurer que tout le monde au bureau a hâte à ces affrontements. Bien sà»r, ces temps-ci, on ne peut pas faire ça, on ne partage pas de bouffe en temps de Covid, mais bientôt, les choses reviendront à la normale et on pourra profiter des petits plaisirs de la vie comme celui-là .
