The year was 1990 and when I was a kid, I was somewhat Christmas obsessed (well to be fair I still am), but not that year, that year I was coughing my head off because I had the whooping cough. Since it was contagious, we weren’t allowed to go to my grandma’s for Christmas and I wasn’t going to see my cousins and play pool, ping-pong and everything we always did at my grandma’s. Needless to say, I was down in the dumps and feeling so very sorry for myself. Normally, my dad didn’t get involved with Christmas presents, well he paid for them, but my mother was the one doing the actual shopping.
On Christmas eve that year though, he left on his own and came back a couple of hours later, came in and told mum to keep us in the living room. We then heard him come in, shut the door and head downstairs where he locked himself in his workshop. An hour later, he came back out carrying the biggest wrapped present I had ever seen! 10-year old me was intrigued to say the least! When we asked him who the present was for, he said it was for the whole family…
Later that night, when it was time to open the presents, they saved that one for last and my sister and I were told to unwrap it. We soon realized that it was in fact 3 decoy boxes and that under them was a brand new Wayne Gretzky Overtime table-top hockey! My sister was absolutely furious: “That’s not for the whole family!!!! That’s just for you and Karine!!!…. As for me, I was speechless and that’s not an easy feat to achieve. You see, every single time we’d go shopping I would find that table-top hockey box and stare at it before begging my parents to get it. The answer was always no…If memory serves, that actually cost $150, in 1990 that was a lot of money. So, while whooping cough stole our big Christmas party, it did get me my favourite Christmas present ever.

That year, we spent the whole of the Christmas holidays playing table-top hockey. I was of course using the Habs and my dad got fed up of using the Kings, so he went and bought himself the Nordiques… Yeah, my sister was right, it really wasn’t a present for the whole family. What it was though was yet another reason why hockey and the Habs made my dad and I closer. When they unveiled the Stastny brothers statue near the Videotron Centre, it brought back a lot of memories for me and that’s probably why I’m so found of that artwork. Fast forward 30 years and that table is still going strong, we still play it, but now there are more players as my nephews also get in on the action and slowly but surely, they are getting better…my title of champion might be in danger sooner rather than later..
On another topic, team Canada junior announced its roster for the upcoming World Junio Championships and the Canadiens first round pick from the last draft, Kaiden Guhle has secured a spot for himself on the blue line. Meanwhile Jan Mysak (2nd round pick – 48th overall) will be playing for the Czech Republic but that’s not exactly a surprise. Of course, Cole Caufield will also take part for Team USA and will be hoping to have much more of an impact than he did last year.

On était en 1990 et lorsque j’étais enfant j’adorais Noel (pour être honnête, c’est encore le cas), mais pas cette année-là , cette année-là je toussais à m’arracher les poumons parce que j’avais la coqueluche. Comme c’était contagieux, nous ne pouvions pas aller fêter chez ma grand-mère et je n’allais pas voir mes cousins et jouer avec eux au billard, au ping-pong et à tout ce qu’on jouait toujours chez ma grand-mère. Je ne crois pas avoir besoin de dire que j’étais plutôt abattu et que je m’apitoyais sur mon sort. Normalement, mon père ne s’impliquait pas dans l’achat des cadeaux de Noel (outre le fait qu’il les payait), c’était toujours ma mère qui se chargeait du magasinage mais ce Noel allait devenir l’exception qui confirme la règle.
La veille de Noel, il est parti seul un matin avant de revenir quelques heures plus tard et de dire à ma mère de nous garder dans le salon. Nous l’avons ensuite entendu entrer de nouveau et se rendre au sous-sol ou il s’est enfermé dans son atelier. Une heure plus tard, il est ressorti en transportant le plus gros Cadeau que j’avais jamais vu! L’enfant de 10 ans que j’étais était très intrigué. Quand on lui a demandé pour qui était le cadeau, il a simplement répondu pour toute la famille…
Plus tard ce soir-là , quand est venu le temps d’ouvrir les cadeaux, mes parents nous ont bien sà»r forcés à garder celui-là pour la fin avant de finalement nous dire à ma sÅ“ur et moi de l’ouvrir. Nous avons vite réalisé que c’était un emballage piège, avec 3 grosses boites vides mais sous celles-ci se trouvait le jeu de hockey sur table Wayne Gretzky Overtime Hockey! Ma soeur était furieuse: “C’est pas un Cadeau pour toute la famille! C’est juste pour toi et Karine!…. Pour ma part, j’étais bouche-bé et ce n’est pas quelque chose de facile à faire. Vous voyez, à chaque fois que nous allions au magasin, je repérais ce jeu de hockey sur table et je le fixais pendant de longues minutes avant de supplier mes parents de l’acheter. La réponse était toujours non…Si ma mémoire est bonne, il coutait 150$, en 1990, c’était beaucoup d’argent. Alors, bien que la coqueluche nous ait volé notre party de Noel cette année-là , elle m’a aussi donné mon plus beau cadeau de Noel à vie.
Nous avons passé le congé au complet à jouer au hockey sur table. J’utilisais bien sà»r le CH et mon père s’est vite tanné d’être les Kings, alors il est retourné au magasin et s’est acheté les Nordiques… Oui, ma soeur avait raison, ce n’était pas vraiment un Cadeau pour toute la famille. Par contre c’était une raison de plus pour laquelle mon père et moi on s’est rapproché. Quand ils ont dévoilé la statue des Stastny au Centre Videotron, ça m’a rappelé tellement de bons souvenirs, c’est probablement pourquoi j’aime cette Å“uvre. 30 and plus tard, on utilise toujours ce jeu et il fonctionne toujours comme un neuf, mais maintenant, il y a des joueurs de plus. Mes neveux participent aussi et lentement mais surement, ils s’améliorent… mon titre de championne sera probablement en danger plus tôt que tard…

Dans un autre ordre d’idée, équipe Canada junior a annoncé sa formation pour le prochain Championnat du monde junior et le premier choix du CH au dernier repêchage, Kaiden Guhle s’est taillé une place à la ligne bleue. Pendant ce temps, Jan Mysak (2e ronde-48echoix au total) représentera la République Tchèque, mais ce n’est pas exactement une surprise. Bien sà»r, Cole Caufield représentera encore une fois les à‰tats-Unis et il espérera avoir plus d’impact que lors du dernier tournoi.
