Things didn’t start very well for the USA last night, in the opening minute of the game, Arthur Kaliyev landed a dangerous hit on an opponent and got himself a seat in the penalty box for half the period. Finland took advantage of the power play to get ahead on the scoreboard. The same Kaliyev made up for his mistake with just 6 seconds left in the first period when he tied-up the score on an American power-play. Caufield got a few chances during that period but failed to find the back of the net. One thing was clear though, this year, Caufield will get plenty of quality ice-time and will be a fixture on the American power play. He was used both right in front of the net in the bumper position with his teammates trying to feed him for quick shots and in what we could call Alexander Ovechkin’s office for timely one-timers.
The Canadiens’ prospect wasted no time and shone bright in the 2nd frame scoring twice within the first minute and 39 seconds. His first goal came when the Finns completely forgot to cover him in their defensive zone, and he slammed home a great feed on which the goaltender was powerless. As for his second goal, it was a thing of beauty! Caufield controlled the puck in the offensive zone and passed it to Jake Sanderson on the blue line who, after a couple of twist and turns, sent it back to him alongside the boards behind the net before Caufield stepped in front of the net and delivered a perfect backhand shot over the goaltender’s shoulder. That marker gave the Americans a 3-1 lead and would turn out to be the game winning goal.
While Caufield failed to impress in the two Wisconsin Badgers games broadcasted by RDS at the end of last month, he was pretty impressive last night. Granted, it’s a short sample but his goal scoring instincts were on full display and his quick release is something that could be insanely useful to the Habs. It was great to see him stand there on the wing on the power play and unleash shots towards the net and when the penalty killers are chasing the puck and he’s free that can be quite the lethal weapon. But it was even better to see him score in even strength situations, on his first goal he was able to find the space and instantly launch a perfect shot to make the most of the opportunity he had created. As for the second goal, it was even better because he looked so at ease in the offensive zone controlling the puck and constantly moving to get himself in a good position before scoring a goal worthy of highlight reels.
When playing with the Badgers, Caufield hasn’t got much of a supporting cast but playing alongside the best American junior players he clearly becomes a real threat. It’s also worth remembering that in the NCAA he plays against players much older than himself which is not the case in this tournament. That being said, when he turns pro, he will have to dominate against older and more experienced players but hopefully, by the time he pierces the Habs’ line-up, Nick Suzuki will be well established and use his timely passes to ease Caufield in. I’d advise you to make sure to watch Team USA’s games this holiday season because something tells me Caufield could make a rather dark period a little brighter.

EDIT: It has just been announced that the Habs have signed Michael Frolik, the 32 year old right winger played 57 games with Calgary and Buffalo last season registering 14 points. This is a one way, one year deal at $750 000 and it pushes the Habs slightly above the cap ceiling which is at $81 500 000. Could this mean that Bergevin is now looking to trade a player to unload some salary? We all know that he likes to have some cap space during the season. Could he have found a trade partner for Paul Byron?
Les choses n’ont pas très bien commencé pour l’équipe américaine hier soir, dans la première minute du match, Arthur Kaliyev a appliqué une dangereuse mise en échec et s’est retrouvé au banc des punitions pour la moitié de la période. La Finlande a profité de son jeu de puissance pour ouvrir la marque. Ce même Kaliyev s’est racheté alors qu’il ne restait que 6 secondes à la première période en nivelant la marque sur un avantage numérique américain. Caufield a eu quelques chances pendant ce premier vingt mais n’est pas parvenu à trouver le fond du filet. Une chose était très claire par contre, cette année, Caufield aura du temps de glace à souhait pendant ce tournoi et fera partie de l’avantage numérique américain. En avantage, il a été utilisé dans la position “bumper… devant le filet alors que ses coéquipiers tentaient de l’alimenter pour qu’l décoche des tirs rapides mais aussi à l’aile dans l’espace qu’on pourrait qualifier de bureau d’Alexander Ovechkin pour lui permettre d’effectuer des tirs sur réception.
L’espoir du CH n’a pas perdu de temps pour briller en 2e période, marquant deux fois pendant la première minute et 39 secondes de l’engagement. Son premier but est venu du fait que les finlandais ont complètement oublié de le couvrir dans leur zone, lui permettant ainsi de convertir une belle passe à la vitesse de l’éclair devant un gardien impuissant. Quant à son deuxième but, il était de toute beauté! Caufield a contrôlé le disque en zone adverse avant de la remettre à Jake Sanderson à la ligne bleue, après quelques petits tours, le défenseur lui a renvoyé la rondelle le long de la bande jusqu’à derrière le filet juste avant que Caufield ne se présente devant le filet et place un tir du revers parfait au-dessus de l’épaule du gardien. Ce but plaçait les américains en avance 3-1 et deviendrait le but gagnant.
Alors que Caufield n’avait pas impressionné lors des deux matchs des Badgers diffuses par RDS à la fin du mois dernier, il l’a définitivement fait hier soir. Je vous l’accorde, c’est un tout petit échantillon, mais ses instincts de marqueurs étaient bien visibles et son tir sans avertissement pourrait être incroyablement utile au CH. C’était bien de le voir à l’aile sur le jeu de puissance mitrailler le but et quand l’unité d’infériorité numérique est à la traîne et il est libre, ça peut devenir une arme mortelle. Mais c’était encore mieux de le voir marquer à forces égales, sur son premier but, il a su trouver l’espace et diriger un tir parfait pour profiter de l’occasion qu’il avait créé. Quant à son deuxième but, il était encore mieux parce qu’il semblait tellement à l’aise en zone adverse, contrôlant la rondelle et bougeant constamment afin de se démarquer pour pouvoir inscrire un filet digne des faits saillants.
Quand il évolue avec les Badgers, Caufield n’a pas nécessairement beaucoup de support, mais quand il s’aligne avec les meilleurs joueurs juniors américains, il devient clairement une menace. Il faut également se souvenir que dans la NCAA, il affronte des joueurs qui sont plus vieux que lui, ce qui n’est pas le cas dans ce tournoi. Ceci étant dit, quand il deviendra un joueur de la LNH, il devra dominer contre ses aînés, mais d’ici là Nick Suzuki sera un joueur établit et pourra utiliser ses passes savantes pour faciliter son intégration. Je vous conseillerais de vous assurer de regarder les matchs des américains pendant les fêtes parce que quelque chose me dit que Caufield pourrait rendre cette sombre période un peu plus belle.

AJOUT: Les Canadiens viennent d'annoncer la signature de Michael Frolik, l'ailier droit de 32 ans a joué 57 matchs la saison dernière avec Calgary et Buffalo, amassant 14 points. Il s'agit d'un contrat d'un an à un volet pour un salaire de 750 000$ qui pousse le CH un peu au dessus du plafond salarial. Est-ce que ça signifie que Bergevin se prépare à liquider un contrat? Nous savons tous qu'il aime avoir une marge de manÅ“uvre sous le plafond pendant la saison. Pourrait-il avoir trouver un partenaire d'échange pour Paul Byron?
