We all remember the date; December 2, 1995. The last time Patrick Roy played for the Montreal Canadiens. As tension between superstar Roy and rookie coach Mario Tremblay was building up, the bench boss saw what he thought was chance to “break… Roy and make him see he wasn’t all that special. Instead, what he did was push him out of Montreal and tarnish both of their legacy. That 11-1 disaster in which Roy allowed 9 goals before Tremblay finally deemed it appropriate to make a goalie switch will live in memories forever…
22 years later to the day, on December 2nd, 2017, the Montreal Canadiens signed their biggest win in franchise history and that win was over the Detroit Red Wings. That night, the Habs put 10 goals past Petr Mrazek and Jimmy Howard. Of course, neither of them threw their arms up to the heavens after being jeered by the crowd and it wasn’t their last game with the Wings but there was still a sense of poetic justice to that evening.
Now, on to current events, Greg Wyshynski from ESPN reports that a team exec confirmed to him this morning that the NHL would kick-off its season on January 13th and that every team will play 56 games. An official announcement has yet to be made, but I for one trust Wyshynsky and where there’s smoke, there’s fire! We may not get hockey over Christmas, but we’ll have plenty of time to prepare our fantasy leagues for the January 13th start. In other news, Team Canada Junior has finally finished its quarantine and will return to the ice today. Rumour has it that final cuts will be made on Friday and that the team will enter the Edmonton bubble for the World Junior Championships on Sunday.

Nous nous souvenons tous de la date; 2 décembre 1995. La dernière fois que Patrick Roy a joué pour les Canadiens de Montréal. Alors que la tension montait entre la super vedette qu’était Roy et son coach recrue Mario Tremblay, le pilote du CH a vu ce qu’il croyait être une occasion de « casser » Casseau et lui faire comprendre qu’il n’était pas si spécial. Ce qu’il a plutôt fait, c’est de le pousser vers la sortie et ternir leur légende respective. Cette désastreuse défaite de 11-1 contre les Wings dans laquelle Roy a concédé 9 buts avant que Tremblay daigne ordonner le changement de gardien, survivra toujours dans nos mémoires.
Exactement 22 ans plus tard, le 2 décembre 2017, les Canadiens de Montréal ont remporté la plus grosse victoire de leur histoire et ils l’ont fait contre ces mêmes Red Wings. Ce soir-là , les Habs ont marqué 10 buts contre Petr Mrazek et Jimmy Howard. Bien sà»r, ni l’un ni l’autre n’a levé les bras au ciel après avoir été pris à parti par la foule et ce ne fut pas leur dernier match avec Détroit, mais il y avait quand même un sens de juste retour des choses ce soir-là .
Si comme moi vous avez grandi pendant les années 80 en idolâtrant Patrick Roy, la date du 2 décembre demeurera marquée d’une pierre noire sur votre calendrier, mais pour une fois, à cette date, de voir le CH oblitérer l’adversaire qui avait précipité la chute des nues de Roy était juste fantastique. Pendant ce match, Paul Byron a marqué son premier tour du chapeau en carrière, Alex Galchenyuk a produit 4 passes, Gallagher a marqué un superbe but et les Québécois Hudon et Deslauriers se sont même permis de marquer également. Normalement, je n’aime pas les matchs à sens unique, mais pour une fois, j’ai bien aimé. Bien sà»r, depuis, les Red Wings sont revenus nous hanter, ils nous ont même battu 4 fois l’an dernier, mai en 2017, pour un soir, on leur a mis une dégelée et j’ai adoré.
