A Wasted Good Start

Prior to the game the Senators showed a tribute video to Guy Lafleur with a violin and piano rendition of Cold Play’s Fix You as the score, it was a very well-done homage and a moving moment for the Canadiens fans in attendance at the Canadian Tire Centre. As for the Habs, they were all wearing a black number 10 patch on their jerseys, and I fully expect that it will stay there all through next season.

Before the start of the game the Senators also handed a check to the Do it for Daron foundation. The foundation was created in memory of Canadiens’ assistant coach Luke Richardson’s daughter Daron who took her own life at 14-years old. Its aim is simple raise awareness about mental health issues and provide help to those who need it. Brady Tkachuk and Brendan Gallagher (who was copiously booed by the Sens’ fans who hadn’t forgotten his comments about their favorite Tim Stutzle) took part in the following ceremonial face-off and the Habs alternate captain skated away without shaking Tkachuk’s hand. In his post-game comments, he said that he had only forgotten to do it and that he didn’t mean anything by it.

Marty St-Louis’ men showed up to play last night and dominated the first frame outrageously but couldn’t go back to the locker room with the lead as the Sens got an early goal when Carey Price lost visual contact with the puck and was easily beaten for the first goal of the game. While I understand that Price has been off for quite some time, he was really struggling to track the puck all through the game, and it was much more noticeable than in his previous outings. The netminder said earlier this week that he wanted to play through his contract as long as he could maintain an acceptable level of play and not be a burden to his team. In that duel with the Sens though, I’m sorry to say that the Canadiens might have won had it not been for Price, that’s not something I’ve said often or ever really but it’s the truth.

At this stage, we do not know what the future hold exactly for Carey Price, but if the Canadiens brass want to try and move him this Summer, that kind of outing won’t exactly be upping his value. Some suggests that he may just pack it in and retire, but I’m not sure I can see him turning his back on 30 million. You might think that with his career earnings, he’s set for life, and couldn’t care less about 30 million, but if Chris Pronger is to be believed, a player’s earnings can easily be spent, who knows how much Price has put in his nest egg.

On a lighter note, even if the game was played in Ottawa, there were plenty of Habs fans in attendance and they too remembered Gallagher’s comments on Stutzle, making it their mission to boo him every single time he touched the puck. I’ve rarely seen a player get the Chara treatment from Habs fans in his own barn. The game went on for what seemed like ages, the Canadiens got 27 penalty minutes while the Sens got 25, there’s definitely bad blood between the 2 divisional rivals and has they both carry on with the respective rebuild, you can expect spirited duels for years to come.

In the good news department, last night, the Coyotes picked up a point in overtime and the Canadiens are now dead last in the league. Yes, in the current circumstances, that’s good news…how the mighty have fallen. Whatever happens until the end of the season, the Habs are now guaranteed not to pick any lower than 4th. If they stay at the very bottom of the standings, according to Tankathon their odds of picking first are a 25.7%, 2nd at 18.7% and 3rd at 55.6%. When life gives you lemons…

Avant le match, les Sénateurs ont projeté un hommage à  Guy Lafleur avec comme trame sonore une superbe version piano et violon de la chanson “Fix You… de Cold Play. C’était un hommage à  la fois sobre et touchant, surtout pour la horde de fanatiques du CH qui bondait le Centre Canadian Tire. Quant aux Habs, ils arboraient fièrement une effigie noire du numéro 10 en hommage au Démon Blond et parions qu’elle sera là  tout au long de la prochaine saison.

Avant que le coup d’envoi soit donner au match, les Sénateurs ont également remis un chèque à  la fondation Do it for Daron. Ladite fondation a été créé à  la mémoire de la fille de l’assistant coach du CH Luke Richardson Daron qui s’était enlevé la vie à  l’âge de 14 ans. Son but est simple, faire prendre conscience aux gens de l’importance de la santé mentale et de fournir de l’aide à  ceux et celles qui en ont besoin. Brady Tkachuk et Brendan Gallagher (qui a été copieusement hué par la foule qui avait frais en mémoire ses commentaires à  l’endroit de Tim Stutzle) ont pris la mise au jeu protocolaire et l’assistant capitaine du CH a quitté le cercle des mises en jeu sans serrer la main de son rival. Un oubli selon lui qui ne signifiait rien, mais ce fut néanmoins remarqué.

Les hommes de Marty St-Louis était prêts hier soir et ils ont outrageusement dominé la première période, mais ils n’ont pu retraiter au vestiaire avec l’avance comme les Sénateurs ont marqué le premier but du match tôt après que Carey Price eu perdu le contact visuel avec la rondelle et eut été battu facilement. Bien que Price ait manqué presque la totalité de la saison, il éprouvait vraiment des difficultés à  suivre le disque hier et c’était beaucoup plus évident que pendant ses premiers matchs. Il a dit lui-même plus tôt cette semaine qu’il désirait compléter son contrat tant et aussi longtemps qu’il pouvait jouer à  un niveau satisfaisant et qu’il ne constituait pas un fardeau pour ses coéquipiers. Dans ce duel contre les Sens toutefois, je suis désolée de dire que le CH l’aurait peut-être emporté n’eut été de sa performance, ce n’est pas quelque chose que j’ai dit souvent ou même que j’ai dit tout cours auparavant.

Présentement, on ne sait pas exactement ce que le future réserve à  Carey Price, mais si l’état-major des Canadiens veut tenter de l’échanger cet été, ce genre de performance ne fera rien pour mousser sa valeur. Certains suggèrent qu’il prendra peut-être tout simplement sa retraite, mais je ne le vois pas renoncer à  30 millions. Peut-être croyez-vous que son argent soit fait et qu’il n’en a que faire, mais si on en croit Chris Pronger, les revenus d’un joueur peuvent être dilapider plus rapidement qu’on ne le croit. Qui sait combien d’argent Price a mis de côté au cours de sa carrière.

Sur une note plus légère, les fans du CH présent à  Ottawa hier se souvenaient également des commentaires de Gallagher sur Stutzle et ils en ont fait leur mission de huer celui-ci à  chaque fois qu’il touchait la rondelle. J’ai rarement vu un joueur recevoir un traitement à  la Chara dans son propre amphithéâtre. Le match a semblé durer pendant une éternité, les Canadiens ont eu 27 minutes de punitions pendant que les Sénateurs en recevaient 25. Il y a définitivement de la haine entre les 2 clubs et alors qu’ils poursuivent tous deux leur reconstruction, on peut s’attendre à  plusieurs duels acrimonieux.

Catégorie bonne nouvelle, hier soir, les Coyotes ont récoltés un point en prolongation et on de ce fait dépasser le CH qui se retrouve bon dernier au classement. Oui, dans les circonstances, il s’agit là  d’une bonne nouvelle… c’est là  ou nous en sommes rendus. Quoiqu’il arrive d’ici la fin de la saison, les Habs ne peuvent maintenant plus choisir plus bas qu’un 4e rang du repêchage. Selon Tankathon, s’ils restent en dernière place, leur chance de choisir premier seront de 25.7%, 2e 18.7% et 3e 55.6 %. Quand la vie vous donne des citrons…
