The Habs definitely played well last night, for most of the game, they were the better team on the ice, unfortunately, that’s not what determines who wins. Montreal was ready and it showed early on in the first when they took advantage of a too many men penalty to the Canucks to make it 1-0 through a Jeff Petry shot that was perfectly screened by Corey Perry. Once again, it’s the second power play unit who delivered. Later in the period, the Habs built momentum by killing a minute and 20 seconds of 5 on 3 power play.

The Canadiens also dominated the second period taking plenty of shots but Tatcher Demko stood tall and stopped every single one of them. For the first 2 periods, they really looked in control but then, in the third period, they took their foot of the pedal and let the Canucks come back. Carey Price resisted as long as possible, but an error in defensive coverage from Ben Chiarot allowed Gaudette’s shot to get through and hit the post before going in. Yes, there should have been a too many men penalty against the Canucks but, in the end, the Canadiens’ weren’t able to widen their lead in the first 2 periods and it cost them.
From then on, the Habs did their best to try and get a win in extra time but it just didn’t happen. Jeff Petry in his post game comments explained that the plan was to take possession, tire them out and then pounce to score. The problem is though, the Canadiens were already tired themselves. I guess you could put that on the travel, but every team deals with that, it’s part of the game. At one stage, the Canucks had the puck and you could clearly hear them plan their move, one of them even shouted: “Let’s go, Gally’s gassed….

To start the OT, Danault was at the faceoff dot with Kotkaniemi on his wing and Petry on defense, one would have though that Danault would have come off in short order to make way for a more attacking forward but he stayed on the ice for 55 seconds, even when the Canadiens had the puck. In the end, they survived the overtime, but they couldn’t score a single goal in the shootout. After Price surrounded a goal to Bo Horvat, Tatar just had to score and yet he elected to go for one of those between the legs trick shot which Demko had no problem stopping.

If we want to see the bright side of things, the Habs have 7 points out of a possible 10 in their last 5 games, but they’ll need more than loser points to get in the playoffs. Also, on Saturday, the Canadiens had committed 16 giveaways, last night, they only had 2, that was a massive improvement. Kotkaniemi had a pretty good game, Danault made some very good defensive plays and Price looked confident and alert.
Montreal will have another shot tomorrow night at 11:00 PM, I would expect Allen to be in net then since there will be another game on Thursday night. Unless of course, Price wants another crack at the Canucks and prefers to let Allen take on the Flames.
Les Habs ont très bien joué pour la majorité du match hier soir, mais malheureusement, ce n’est pas de cette façon qu’on détermine le gagnant d’un match de hockey. L’équipe était prête hier soir et ça a paru tôt en première période quand les joueurs ont capitalisé lors d’un avantage numérique par le biais d’un bon tir de Petry admirablement voilée par Perry. Encore une fois, c’est la deuxième vague qui a fait bouger les cordages. Plus tard en première, les Canadiens ont réussi à se donner du rythme en écoulant 1 minute 20 secondes à 5 contre 3 en infériorité numérique.

Le Tricolore a aussi dominé la 2e période et a pris un grand nombre de lancers, mais Tatcher Demko s’est montré intraitable. Pour les 40 premières minutes, le CH a vraiment eu l’air en contrôle mais, ça s’est gâté en 3e, ils ont levé le pied et laissé les Canucks revenir dans le match. Carey Price à résister aussi longtemps que possible, mais une erreur de couverture défensive de Ben Chiarot a laissé juste assez de place à Gaudette pour décocher un tir parfait qui s’est faufilé dans le filet après avoir touché l’intérieur du poteau. Oui, il y aurait dà» avoir une punition pour trop d’hommes sur la glace, mais au final, l’incapacité du CH à augmenter son avance dans les 2 premières périodes aura été couteuse.
à partir de ce moment-là , la Sainte-Flanelle a fait de son mieux pour tenter de l’emporter en surtemps, mais elle a tout simplement échoué. Jeff Petry a expliqué dans ses commentaires d’après-match quel était le plan, le CH voulait prendre possession de la rondelle, fatiguer l’adversaire et bondir pour marquer ensuite. Le problème par contre, c’est que les joueurs du CH eux-mêmes étaient déjà fatigues. Je suppose qu’on pourrait mettre ça sur le dos du voyage de 6 heures en avion, mais toute les équipes doivent composer avec cette réalité. à un certain moment, les Canucks avaient la rondelle et on a clairement entendu un de leurs joueurs crier: « On y va, Gally est crevé! ».

Pour commencer la prolongation, Danault était au cercle des mises en jeu avec Kotkaniemi à l’aile et Petry en défense, on aurait pu penser que Danault serait revenu changer au banc pour permettre à un joueur plus offensif d’y aller, mais il est resté sur la glace pendant 55 secondes, même quand le CH a brièvement repris la rondelle. Ils ont réussi à survivre à la prolongation, mais ils n’ont pas pu marquer un seul but lors des tirs de barrage. Après que Price eut accordé un but à Bo Horvat, Tatar n’avait d’autre choix que de marquer et pourtant, il a élu d’avoir recours à une feinte entre les jambes à laquelle Demko n’a tout simplement pas mordu.

Si on veut voir le bon côté des choses, le CH a 7 points sur une possibilité de 10 lors de ses 5 derniers matchs, mais ils auront besoin de plus que des points de perdant pour faire les séries. Toujours du côté des positifs, samedi, le CH avait commis 16 revirements, hier, il n’y en a eu que 2, ce qui est une immense amélioration. Kotkaniemi a connu un bon match, Danault a fait de bons jeux défensif et Price été confiant et alerte.
Montreal aura la chance de se reprendre demain soir à 11:00 PM, je crois qu’on verra Allen dans le but comme il y aura 2 matchs en 2 soir à moins que Price veuille avoir une autre chance de battre les Canucks et qu’Allen se charge des Flames.
