if you have a ps4 the last guardian sounds like it might be something that would interest you. it's mostly just discovery/platforming with a cool animal buddy. it was so damn good.

the more puzzle-y type or more action/combat/twitch reflex type of platformer?

Here's a few good modern ones :

-Ori and the Blind Forest is a gorgeous 2D platformer in the style of Nintendo's Metroid series, where you've got a huge map(that you can put onscreen anytime) to explore, but you gotta find new items/abilities in order to unlock other parts of the map. You control a cute white cat-like creature in a fairytale-like environment. It's really pretty and atmospheric, and a good game in that genre. The controls are great : super tight, fast and incredibly fluid. level design is always interesting so platforming is tons of fun. Combat is done with a homing long range magic attack.

-Hollow Knight is again a 2D Metroid style game, where you control a little beetle samuraï character who platforms and fight around in an elegant, dark, gothy world populated by insects. This one is an amazing example of that genre as well. Combat is sword-based and here.

-Fez is a 2D platformer/puzzle where you have the ability to "turn the world around in a 3D space" to help you find ways to traverse the levels. Pretty clever idea and is fun.

-Shovel Knight is a mix of various older nes games : mainly Mega Man and Ducktales. This is an amazing oldschool action platform game, level design is nuts and it's jam packed with good ideas. This one is universally celebrated, pretty much. can't go wrong with it.

I remember suggesting The Last Guardian to you way back. Have you checked it out? EDIT : daeth beat me to it

Cuphead is fantastic. Beautiful looking game. Old school side scroller vibe. Brutally difficult.

the 1930s animation is definitely her style. i feel like the gameplay seems like it would get old fast though. Havent tried it yet

sidescrolling run and gun games don't ever get old if they're done well. Even when the character has a limited move set(all you need is a couple different types of shots). All depends if the developper managed to cram lots of cool level design ideas.

I played it coop with a friend and didn't like it. It looks and sounds amazing but the gameplay is essentially pure trial and error which I got bored of fast for whatever reason. Super Meat Boy is kind of the same in that regard but I really really liked that game. I guess maybe I just prefer the lack of combat and tighter platforming in Meat Boy? I dunno. My friend loved Cuphead.

Super Meat Boy is an awesome platformer indeed. Quite challenging but that's a good thing in this case. Levels are expertly crafted too.

Also forgot to mention Axiom Verge, a good Metroid clone.

Another one(albeit more of an action adventure game, although there's tons of platforming to do) is Cave Story. That one is charming as a mother(frank)er. One of, if not THE oldest indie game to receive attention and accolades. Great music and sprite work. You got a couple lil guns in your inventory that you can upgrade, and it's really fun action yet all really cutesy. I played the heck outta this one, can't recommend it enough.
It's a freeware, you can just go to the "official" fansite and legally download it fo free

invited a new Ms Vaggy over, that I met on Instagram, to help me build my new bed. Wednesday
