Its pretty simple, people respect courage and they don't have it. This years version of the canucks are even weaker and more pathetic then last years. The canucks game plan seams to be to trade or sign the nicest possible people and best family men in the NHL. Which is great if you are planning a family bbq but we are trying to win a cup. This team is quite frankly 90% straight wimps and whiners. Kesler, Luongo, Sedins, Ballard, Edler and Burrows are some of the biggest whining cowards in the game. If someone on the canucks is on the recieving end of a cheap shot they turn to the referee and cry rather then take it upon themselves to actually man up and do something about it. Around the league we are a joke. Other teams know we have no heart, toughness or character and actually look forward to playing us because they know they can take liberties all game long without fear of any retribution. You cannot have a an entire team of nice, gentle, kind men and expect to win a 7 game battle versus a team of REAL men like the bruins. Why would it be so bad to have a couple bad ass beer drinking a holes who enjoy nothing more then going out and punishing people with body checks or their fists. Our team is not balanced enough. You need bad men and good men. Until this culture is changed we will never rise to be champions and waste all the talent we have.

...four North American players out of 7. This cant be????

I've been saying it for years...too much of that type makes it 2 teams to 1 when you include the game inside the game of defeating the officials as well. Lappy was added which is also carries this rep big time...CoHo has a ton of potential but all I see is Wellwood for a grit comparison. Newly added Booth appears to deflect responsibility when questioned by the media....he's soft even though I was proud to see him stand up to a fight he probably knew he'd lose.

I don't see it changing anytime soon. I mean, Bieksa is our tough guy on D and he really picks and chooses his fights and usually at the worst time to cover his bad performance...totally self serving. Our core is here for a long time so our best shot at a cup is to outscore outscore outscore.

It would be nice to see a player like Chris Neil added to the 3rd and another scrapper added to the 4rth. Neil could be moved around the top 9 for a little protection that can get on the score sheet a well. Last two seasons I was preaching bringing in Arnott as another player who is well respected and pretty tough when he needs to be. I'm always told we don't need those kinds of players but I ask which team they have been watching in the playoffs the last three years? Our exits the last three years have all been in the same fashion...worn down and beat up by a bigger tougher team.

heres my outsiders view of the canucks

I went into last years playoffs wanting a canadian team to win, so i was cheering for the canucks

the problem is they dive, cry, female dog, moan, (as i ref i hate this). ALso they dont fight through traffic, they dont put their nose to the grind stone. They dont play a style i would say deserves to win.

Now do they have skill? yes they have some of the most skillful players in the nhl... but i wouldnt build my team around players that cant take a hit to make a play, play through traffic and not worry about what the refs are doing.

Even this year in the REGULAR SEASON after almost every play they look at the ref and throw their hands up in the air, even mid play when the should be backchecking.

They are already digging their grave and going no where fast this year.

Yeah....look at the Leafs who the whole world loves. They are obviously a better team because...well, look at the standings.

Kesler, Sedins, Burrows, Luongo, Edler,,,, What do these guys have in common besides the already mention criticisms????? They were all products of Brian Burke and David Nonis. Thank god we got rid of those clowns before they could trade away all our future...

Enjoy your Leafs. Trading away those picks for Kessel....Seguin(future franchise player) for a very soft player like Kessel has Burke and Nonis written all over it. Yeah, the NHL loves the Leafs...why not? Look how many marginal teams you guys have helped make the playoffs over the last decade without getting barely a taste yourselves. But hey....no one will push you guys around at least because you have some useless grit built around your franchise player....Kessel.

i never mentioned the leafs... this is a canuck thread. I made no personal attacks just observations. Changing the subject shows 1 of 2 things
a- proof of trolls
b- proof im right

I could have brought up that the fanbase has a undeserved sense of entitlement... but i chose to leave that out trying to leave it as a hockey conversation.

and as for the leafs i still think they are over achieving and will be battling for 6-8 all year.

THe leafs have grit in guys like Phaneuf, Schenn, brown, steckle, and others, and guys like grabo and kuli are strong as they come just dont throw the hits that often. Grabo gets run over by chara left right and centre and bounces up were the sedins get sneezed on and play dead.

I think your team is the one run by grave diggers....I hardly see any being dug here....more like back filling old graves. We need to get tougher but this team can and has been further than your Leafs over the last 43 years (3-0 finals) so really....how much has been acheived by tougher teams like the Leafs?

I think Gillis will make this team a little more balanced with tougher players eventually. He just needs time to sort out all the skilled female doges that Burke and Nonis crammed on this team. The Sedins and Kesler are here for a while but I see Burrows in a new uni when his contract expires one way or another. I see Hansen and Raymond gone as well...posibly Edler even if they make a move for a player like Weber/Suter.

ive ripped on the leafs for a while now, they are my team but have made sooo many bonehead moves.... so im the wrong one to try and get under my skin with that

i want the canucks to do well, i want all Canadian teams to do it... but honestly as soft as some players are i think it starts with the coaching. If they had a coach screaming knock that crap off, and sitting them if they didnt it would have been different and honestly it hink the cup would have been yours

My view on this season compared to last.

I think that they have a lot of players coming off of surgery which takes time to iron out. They have a slow starting goalie, whether or not that's a good excuse is up to debate. The team relies heavily on systems, a system that is extremely hard to beat when executed properly, but it requires timing to be good. This is a team that was destined to start extremely slow this year.

Combine that with a lot of the same sentiments OP shared. I think last season there was a bit of fear in playing Vancouver after they began smashing through the regular season like dry tinder. Teams were playing to not make a mistake for fear of being buried by the juggernaut Vancouver. The finals in Boston exposed that they are not as scary as you might think and they can be easily pushed around. The fear of playing the Canucks is gone which in my mind has a big impact. Not the fear of physicality but the fear of being embarrassed.

If the canucks had an bumhole that hit everything that moved (Dustin Brown, Cal Clutterbuck), a big horse that could stand in front of the net and shove home garbage (Brian Boyle, Milan Lucic, even Ryan Smyth though he's not big) and a coach that excelled in building character and playing open hockey (Peter Laviolette is a good example) they would be both infinitely closer to winning a cup and being a team I could root for.
