I take it you really didn't watch the games then... Halak was good, but the team played very well and kept the scoring chances down. Sure there were alot of shots, and most of them from far out and bad angles, Halak came up big when needed but it was fairly good excuted game plan. Watch the Pittsburg series again and tell me about Crosby's scoring chances and why he was getting frustrated... Halak won us the 1st round, no doubt... although it was his play that lost us game two and three in that round. It was guys like Gomez, Gill, Gorges, Gionta and Cammy that were the stars in round two. Round three, we played a much more physical team that our forecheck didn't have as much an effect on, as we turned Washington and Pittsburg into turnover machines. Add to the fact that Halak became mortal and Leighton became Halak, game over.

So NJ can't be the best team every year and win the Cup. So NJ can get the worst matchups possible in the league and fail to beat teams that play them amazingly well, despite NJ having superior records to them in the standings, but not against each other (NYR 1-5-1 (lost in 5), Carolina 1-3 (lost in a bitter 7 games), Philly 1-6-1 (lost in 5).

The team struggled specifically in 05-06 and 06-07.. even 07-08 seasons, despite getting into the 2nd round 06 and 07 (losing to the eventual Cup champs in 06, and Cup Final loser in 07... not bad losses to take.)

There were 2 transitions that have taken place that the Devils haven't seen since the Stevens era began.. which was the end of the Stevens era ha.
Leaders, captains, and alternate captains in Stevens, Niedermayer and Daneyko all departed/retired. Thats a HUGE hole in leadership and in talent, all on defense!

Lou tried to make good moves but didn't do so hot with Malakov, McGillis, Klee etc. Then at the end of the 07 season he tried to replace Rafalski with Rachunek and Vishnevski. ugh. And Gomez with Zubrus.. ugh.

but in 07-08 began a transition year. Parise-Zajac-Langenbrunner emerged as a great line! and the future looked bright in youngsters Parise, Zajac, and Clarkson. Martin looked to be a great player as well.

And since then, the Devils have only improved. This year they already look as good as they've been since '02-'03.. with OR without Kovalchuk.


and thats my defense. and i'm proud of it, even if we lost in the 1st round the last 3 years. It happens. At least we were competitive all season and made the playoffs, and look to keep contending for the next 5 years (based on the skilled prospects).. AND WE DIDN'T EVEN HAVE TO TANK TO DO IT!!! ... lookin at you Pittsburgh and Chicago. But i suppose we'll have to win a Cup before I can say that. Detroit did it that way, i'm sure the Devils can too.

Lebda was signed as a reasonably cheap 2 year stopgap to avoid rushing some potentially good prospects who just aren't ready. Aulie and Blacker are basically straight out of junior and Aulie was hurt for the last part of the season. This signing is to replace Finger who's cap hit is 2M more. At the end of the day you're poopting your diaper over $1.4M 6th or 7th defenseman. How are you not embarrassed by this????
