The draft is a construct to restrict the free market so they can artificially create markets in areas that wouldn't have them i.e. Carolina, Florida etc.

Rookies are extremely valuable to the NHL, regardless of whether or not they have proven anything in the NHL yet. If they weren't valuable, there would be no draft to restrict where they are allowed to play.

That's because most people operate under a more free market system where they apply to whatever company they want to work for. Imagine if the top student at Harvard every year had to work for a company that drafted him instead of him choosing to go where ever the (frank) he wants because he's actually really good at what he does. "Oh sorry sir, you can't work at Google because they won the Silicon Cup last year, you have to go work for the 31st best tech company otherwise it wouldn't be fair for the other tech companies".
