Agreed. The grammar is easily the most offensive part of the post.

In truth, it's part of an HB russian roulette game we're playing in the Engels thread.

1.) Post something truly ban worthy;

2.) Hit the ! button;

3.) Braidan = no ban / Philly mod = loooooooong ban.

Come join the fun!

I assume you are referring to the premise I stated during the depths of the losing streak, that the pending return of Powe, Gagne and Betts to the lineup (among other things) could be a catalyst for the team to improve, and that because of this, making a significant trade (as had been pushed for by Panotch and others) before measuring the impact of those players' return was ill-advised.

I went out of my way at the time to make it was clear that I wasn't saying the return of those players was a "cure-all" for the team's woes...but I was willing to go out on a limb and bet the collective impact of getting those guys back would be substantial, and indeed it was. I don't think it was mere coincidence that the beginning of the team's return from the dead began the very day all three of those players were back in the lineup together. Moreover, one could see the immediate impact they had when each of them returned. Betts' restored the sagging PK, which had started out the season strong before becoming horrid during his absence....also his line being restored was big, as it once again proved to be very effective in checking and yes, scoring goals, allowing Lavy to roll four lines with confidence...which is a lot better situation than before Betts (and Powe) returned, when questionable AHL types were being rotated into the bottom six, rendering them much less effective and throwing the lines into disarray. Then there's Gagne, who, though in a drought right now, had an immediate impact upon his return, re-igniting a left for dead powerplay and putting up 14 pts in his first 14 games back. Let's not forget Powe, who brought back with him his speed, energy, strong checking and boardwork as well as that tireless work ethic..he's one of only a few guys on the team who you don't have to worry about what kind of effort you're going to get. So, without question, their collective presence was a significant factor in the team righting the ship when they did. Even Meltzer took note of their role:

"A big part of the reason why the Flyers have looked so much better of late has been the returns of checking liners Blair Betts and Darroll Powe. Even more important, Simon Gagne has begun to round back to form and is coming off a hat trick against the Rangers." - B Meltzer

That is not to say that it was the only factor. You are correct in saying that things like skating hard and playing with urgency and desperation etc. are keys to winning games...but, excuse me for saying this, that's kind of a "no-duh"...it's very basic and obvious stuff. I mean, who is going to refute that? Like, what, someone might say "No, I think the Flyers just need to go out and be lazy and apathetic and stand still a lot..."? I don't think so. So, you'll get no argument from me there...playing with desire, energy and commitment are keys to winning (and by the way, Betts and Powe embody that kind of play). But beyond that, there are numerous other factors that come into play when it comes to why a particular team wins or loses. Things like who they have healthy and in the lineup and who is behind the bench and what system the team is employing... all of these can factor into a team's success.

Effort and desire being equal, teams with more skilled and experienced players (healthy and) in their lineup, teams with highly competent coaching staffs, teams who implement good systems will tend to win more games. You seem to discount and/or ignore these and other factors sometimes, in favor of the rather simplistic view that that it all comes down to skating hard and giving strong efforts. Yeah those are important to any team's ability to compete and/or win games, but there are numerous other critical factors that come into play that make some teams better than others.

That's what I meant on the other thread when I commented about the "rudimentary" and "basic" perspective you tend to give in your posts (with some exceptions). Not that I'm doing rocket science here, but I was going deeper, doing research and analysis on the impact of those guys' absence from the lineup, noting the negative effect it had on the special teams, the line cohesion, and overall level of speed and energy.... I drew the conclusion that getting those guys back could help improve those things and thus could help the team turn things around. Think about the impact of trading up to Gagne, Betts and Powe from three unproven guys like Nodl, LaLiberte, and Kalinski. It's significant.

Does that mean that they're going automatically win every game they play? Of course not...but, effort being equal, are they a better team, capable of winning more games with those guys in the lineup than out if it? Absolutely.

Sam,

The insinuation that the orange and black are continuously guilty of some kind of malicious intent is insulting for a multitude of reasons. I will be happy to walk you down the bloody road paved by valuable players like; Propp, Lindros, Premieu and Gagne. The Flyers have had their dreams shattered many times by hits that were much more malicious and much more premeditated. As you said there was absolutely nothing illegal about the hit. Nothing. It appears to me your issue is with the NHL and the NHLPA not Jeff Carter and the Flyers.

Don’t blame the Flyers. I understand the quick jump to judgment when Carcillo or Hartnell are the supposed culprits, but Jeff Carter hits once a month at best. He has the ability to be one of the game’s greats. The reason why he is not is because he does not exert himself in exactly that manner more often. Are you prepared to take hits like that away from OV or Phaneuf? Are you prepared to give back one, two or all of the Devil’s cups????

Even the largest of Devil’s homers would admit that intimidation was a monumental reason why they were successful for the better part of a decade. I am not sure if you have played the game, but if you have to be concerned that every time you step over the blueline decapitation is not all that far way it might impact your decision making just a bit.

If you want to remove these types of hits from the game than make it retroactive and lets replay the last 15 cups. You are now cupless.

I can’t believe a Devil’s blogger could possible take this stance. Talk about hypocrisy.

We are all happy the young and underrated defenseman is ok, but don’t attempt to remove the true spirit of the game because your team did not get your way. I have read you before. You do a nice job and I’d like to think you are better than that.

don't know how epic this is but it made my brain hurt trying to read it for some reason

What a load of uninformed and utter BS this article is.
So, Beniciaman, you really don't think that Nabber's improvements over the summer have anything to do with his record at the moment? You don't think his better and heavier use of the b-fly has anything to do with the down-low goals he is not giving up as much as last year (including the five hole)? You don't think his aggressiveness has to do with a lower breakaway goal total he gives up this year? You don't think his change in crease movement ( less standup shuffles) has anything to do with a lower "in traffic" number of goals he gives away this year? You don't think his reduced tendency to cheat wide has anything to do with a lower number of short-side goals he gives up this year?
None of the mentioned factors in itself is a dramatic improvement but the sum of them is more than enough worthy to mention.
Instead of focusing of his actual game, which you obviously could not even hope to be able to dissect, you , instead , choose to focus on "contract year" and "olympics" and so on. Not that those are not factors, 'course they are, but only a clueless blogger would completely dismiss the technical parts in favor of the speculative ones.
First of all, let me ask you something, since you use the age old holdout year to support your "money " argument, do you even have any clue why it happened in the first place? Did you even BOTHER to consider finding out the truth before you began your specualtion? Why do you assume it was entirely Nabber's "greed" at fault and you don't even consider the possibility of Lombo lowballing Nabber? Also , did you ever hear about those pesky little bhasturds called agents? They usually drive the negotiations and it just so happens that Nabber has one of the nasty ones. Consider this: Lombo tries to lowball Nabber, Meehan gets pissed and cuts off negotiations, Lombo gets his panties in a bunch and decides to strongarm Meehan by bringing up Kipper and Toskala thinking between them they will do well enough to make Nabber and Meehan bow to his will, the whole scenario backfires, Lombo calls Meehan and tells him I give you what you want just give me my starting goalie. Why can't that be a valid scenario .. because it doesn't portray Nabber like the money hungry Rusky you and some other fools like to imagine he is?
Now onto the "hometown discount" : doesn't anyone see anything wrong with EXPECTING a player to reduce his salary demands just to please the fans, especially a player who is considered a big part of the team? And why is it that every time a Russian/European player demands big money , they are considered villains, but when certain "beloved" Canadians run from their current teams to the highest bidder or they demand max pay, it's considered "earned right"? I am not saying it happens all the time but .. let's be fair here.
Consider this scenario .. you work for a company under a contract with a timeline .. you are few years away from retirement and your contract needs to be renewed. However the company you work for is cash strapped and they can't really afford to give you a raise, despite your good record, your reliability and performance, and they also have a potential replacement(s) under their wing, replacements that, most likely are going to render you useless before your time is done.
Now there is another company ( or companies) who would like to have you for the last few years of your career and they are willing to pay top salary for your position. You know this could very well be your last hurray before you call it quits.. Are you going to tell me, considering all these factors, that you are ABSOLUTELY going to turn down the bigger contract and take less pay out of ... loyalty for the other company?

Just sayin'.

I didn't say you said he wasn't a very good defenseman anymore...I merely repeated your own words...I'll do it again (slight paraphrase): you said "Timonen in particular (versus Pronger) has shown signs of declining already" and "Timonen has shown definite signs of wearing down"....yes, those words do seem to imply that he's an aging D man in decline and thus not a good defenseman anymore, but they're your words...not mine.

- exlund

You don't get to state what my word say, or what my opinion means. Implying what I said are your words, not mine.

- MJL

The reason his minutes are down isn't due to some sort of decline in his play or physical condition... it's due to Pronger being here now, c'mon, you know that! That said, 23+ minutes is still a pretty heavy load historically for him.

- exlund

Pronger being here is part of it. But so is the Flyers making a conscious effort to limit his minutes. He's worn down in the past and they need to keep an eye on his icetime. C'mon, you should know that!

- MJL

Pronger leads the D in PK time per game, so of course another guy coming in taking that much of a bite is going to mean less PK time for the rest of the D...

Again, these reductions in Timo's minutes are not due to some sort of deterioration of his game or physical shape, but rather due to the addition of a dominant #1 defenseman being added to the roster.

- exlund

same point, same answer as above.

- MJL

Two seasons ago (and beyond), he wasn't splitting time with Pronger and thus had more PP time and production and more PK time. I agree about keeping an eye on his minutes...I was one of the first and only people expressing concern about this in the past...not because he was declining, but just as a precaution, to preserve his energy and vigor over the course of a long NHL season (plus Olympics this yr). I was very happy to see Pronger here to share the load as that should ultimately help extend his longevity.

- exlund

If he wasn't declining physically, there would be no reason to keep an eye on his minutes. Thanks for making my point.

- MJL

I didn't overlook it...I don't play that way...I already addressed it earlier, but I will address it for you again...when Timo was having those top production years in Nashville he was playing a TON more PP time versus now... and that's where most of his points were scored...for example...in 2005-06, he played 6:03 per game in PP time, and scored 38 of his 50 points, some 76%, with the man advantage. By contrast, this season, with Pronger on board, he's playing 41% less powerplay time than that. So, of course his production won't be the same...even so, he's not that far behind in pts per game versus his prior seasons production, which, considering the significantly lower PP time, is impressive.

- exlund

Theres that famous exlund spin. Make a point previously, about his numbers. Then when it's thrown back at you, find another way in using the numbers.
If the Flyers wanted to, they could play Timonen more minutes in every part of ther game, including PP, PK, and ES.

- MJL

You tend to think your opinions are valid just by virtue of them being your opinions...some may not hold your opinions in such high regard, and thus it's entirely appropriate in that context for you to give some detail and or basis to support your comments so others can better understand where you're coming from.

- exlund

I don't care what others think about my opinions. And you don't decide what I have to do or what's appropiate for me, regarding my opinions. You have enough to worry about with your own opinions. I agve plenty of detail originally. It's not my fault you can't seeit, or can't grasp it.

- MJL

I see pretty much all of it, but usually find it more interesting to explore the less obvious aspects of things in my posts...you tend to keep it on a more simplistic and basic level...that's ok too...there's room for both styles.

- exlund

I think you tend to invent things as being there, that aren't there. That's okay, that's your style.

- MJL

Well, considering you think a player who has been playing as a top four defenseman for the better part of two seasons now, with two different teams, is really a borderline NHL'er, and that Timonen is definitely wearing down and declining, and being that you couldn't see certain flaws in Carle's game at times, I can't put much credence in what you say in this area. We have different views on players...I'm very comfortable in my assessments, as the results usually play out as I project. Yours, um, not so much.

- exlund

You were wrong about everyone of those points, involving all 3 players. You still don't understand what a top 4 defenseman is. It's a plus for me, that you don't put much credence into what I say in this area.

- MJL

I think we can find some common ground here in that at some point, Timonen will have a meaningful decline in play...but I don't see it yet...you just said here yourself that it isn't substantial yet...then why say something like "definitely wearing down" and "Timonen in particular has shown signs of decline"...doesn't that seem premature? Who knows, he may be one of those players who plays at a high level until his late 30s...judging by the way he's playing now, I think it's not a stretch to say that, barring serious injury, he likely has at least 2-3 good years left in him. I believe this to be true for Pronger as well...that lines up with my window for the Flyers being a better team in 2-3 years when certain players are more developed and mature...I guess you're saying that you feel that those two will decline enough in that timeframe to be a detriment to the team and offset any benefit from the younger players getting better? That's possible...I guess we'll see.

- exlund

I definitely see it. Again, Timonen was a better player two years ago than he is now. Pronger isn't the same player he was a few years ago. Again, you act like I said both will be out of the League in a year or two. I didn't. But how long can you expect both to be top defenseman, worth their Cap hits? The time is right now for Pronger and Timonen, not 2-3 years from now.

I've given you plenty of oppurtunity to prove I'm wrong. You haven't done it. I knew that you couldn't from the start. And despite your statement that you don't want to be "provoked into an inane debate". You have done so again. I keep repeateing that statement to you, to show how full of it you are, regarding that. So this chapter is over. There aren't anymore points to be made.

So reply back if you must. I won't even read it, so don't waste your time.
I have no further interest in what you have to say on this matter!

Not from Hockeybuzz, but Epic regardless:

''Look folks: some people seem to think that because I work in the pictures, I should piss away money on private jets or first class flights. Rest assured: I take LOTS of first class flights. But while I've got some comfortable money, it'd disappear quick if I didn't respect a $. So for quick, 1hr flights to Vegas or SF from LA, I never minded @SouthwestAir. Never had a problem with them before, either. But contrary to their claim that I regularly purchase two seats, I wasn't a regular 2-seat buyer until just this week. They SEIZED on that. In their "apology" blog, they implied (or flat-out wrote) that I regularly purchase 2 seats. Writing that buttresses their lie: 2 Fat 2 Fly. But, by their own guidelines, I was not, in fact, 2 Fat 2 Fly: the arm rests went down & I could buckle my seat belt w/o an extender. So...? Hey @SouthwestAir: you bring that same row of seats to the DailyShow, and I'll sit in 'em for all to see on TV. If I don't fit, I'll donate $10k to charity of your choice. But when I do (& buckle the belt as well)? 1) You admit you lied. 2) Change your policy, or at least re-train your staff to be a lot more human & a lot less corporate when they pull a poor girl off the plane & shame her. ''

''Had three seats/whole row for me & Jen. She skipped SF, so I went solo checked in and was given the 2 tix there & return 2 (for that p.m.). Going out, even with 2 tix, I only sat in one seat, sleeping against window, w/empty seat between me and follow passenger. Coming back would have been the same, at 7pm. But I got to the airport early enough to try to bump-up my flight to 5:20 - a practice @SouthwestAir does often.I was told 5:20 flight was packed, but I could go Standby. They sent me to gate. Told lady whole story, and she said there wouldn't be two seats on that earlier flight. I said I only needed one seat & that I didn't buy an extra seat because I'm fat (which I am), but because I'm anti-social and didn't want to sit next to someone & possibly have to make convo (in person, I'm very shy). She said she understood. I was issued the solo ticket. I get on the plane: open seat in the front row. Put my bag away, the sit between two ladies. As I'm about to buckle my extender-less seatbelt, the woman who issued the ticket to me appeared in the doorway of the plane, came over to me and said the Captain said I wasn't going to be allowed to sit there because I was a safety risk. I asked for clarification and was given none (also asked "Please don't do this" but that, too, fell on deaf ears. Ladies on either side said I wasn't a problem. SWA-lady said arm-rests the decider. Arm-rests come down, and voila! I'm legit! I've passed the stinkin' arm-rest-test. And still, the lady asks me to get up and come with her off the plane. I get up without a fuss at all, quietly grab my bag, make eye contact with a fellow Fatty who was praying he'd pass, and leave. You think I wanna (frank) around on an airplane? I was right: I fit in that seat. But I can't risk not complying: I'm more afraid of AirFeds.

Let's be honest here: the Blues have never won the Stanley Cup. The Penguins won the cup last year.

It's a complete personal failure on your part, and a stunning personal victory on his part.

I mean, he was a big part of it. He bought the jersey and the hat. He bought the big bag of corn chips. He sat in his trailer, and he cheered on the Penguins through each and every game of that Cup run (except when he had to work the late shift at Tim Horton's).

He should probably have his named engraved on the cup.

What have you done in your life?

Nothing.

NO! Instead of having constructive conversations and discussing ideas based on a radical approach and/or hypothetical thoughts.. rather, get accosted by ignorance and idiocy by supposed 'fans' that would rather regurgitate jargon and the obvious out of simplicity or a need to inflate their supposed hockey IQ.

Furthermore, the threads in this forum have been the same, repetitive, over critiqued malaise for a month. Its sad!!

So, alas, as someone sticks thier neck out to chew on a concept with peers out of pure need of fandome. They get b!+c# slapped by the Pierre McGuire know it alls that have less knowledge than Mike Milbury.. for what? Ego? A repitior of fancy pictures to post once someone steps out of the 'box'?

Im so very content I hang out with the Eric Engels' and Steven Hindle's of the world whom are able to have constructive intelligent conversations regardless of the topic. In the interest of hockey, not blustered ego.

ps. See Mike Boone's post to bloggers on Habsinsideout. Its ever more relevant here.

Besides all the above. If you care to taste my bane. Take a look at my initial exchange with Shutdown. I don't mind communicating. Although when, someone doesn't bother to read and keep an open mind and discuss out of infinite possibilities. And proceeds dissects out of negativity without disdain or respect for the art of thought and creative possibilities; irrational, superiority, egotism. Makes this entire process moot.

In closing. My entire point of that post was, I feel we should rebuild. And get er done while stocks are high. Also not allow high value assets reach the last year of contracts so that their value subsides.

Thanks guys. You make this soo enjoyable. Im should start calling in to talk with Tony Marinaro. Same result. Blustered narcissism.

I expected better from you. Prax.

ou make me angry. For real. But then I realize, you are simply pathetic.

Im far from alarmist. If you cared to discuss and probe you might learn something about perspective... ohhh but, hang on, you are never wrong and alll knowing... sorry I submit to thy grandeur.

Its the act of interaction Prax. You know. Having the ability to come to a public forum and have a productive interesting insightful and humorous exchange. I have never claimed to have the answers and have preachy teachings to deliver. Sounds like you projecting to me. Sounds like perhaps, Prax you have the superiority complex and lace it with arrogance and condescending guile.
