first, I don't think Phaneuf is terrible. he's just not very good. he's never going to be the difference that makes a team much better.

now, I did defend Phaneuf back in the day. my defense of him was that he was depended on for an incredibly tough work load, and still managed average, not spectacular, results. I argues at tgat time that while not worth his salary, he's not overpaid by m9re than 2 million than what he brings to the table.. there was a time when he faced the toughest quality of competition in the league, with gunnarson as a partner.

but quite a bit has changed since then. he was 26, 27, 28 years old at the time. in his prime. scored at a 40 to 50 point pace while taking on those duties. along with being the number 1 PK dman for the Leafs. he was the Leafs undisputed number 1 dman. the last few years in toronto, he was falling down the depth chart. his even strength ice per game fell behind Gardiner first, then Rielly. he wasnt first pairing by the time he was dumped. Rielly was taking the tough minutes Phaneuf used to. look it up, it's damn true. and honestly, the most vocal of Leaf fans that defended Phaneuf, were rather silent before he was traded, not after, if that's what you're insinuating. his offensive output has dropped rather significantly from those seasons, and quite frankly, him and ceci are among the worst pylons in the league in their own zone. hes 32 years old now, not 26 and in his prime.

things change, and quite frankly, he deserved some criticism back then, but also some praise for what he had to handle in the first half of his stint in toronto. he doesn't have half the responsibility, is less effective at what his responsibilities are now, and even gets paid a bit more than back then.

he probably still takes more criticism than he should (due to contract, team, and general douchey demeanor), but let's be honest, there is a LOT more criticism deserved these days too.

Phaneuf got great media during playoffs.

he showed great heart and leadership.

The point that is missed in capers post is that you are all idiots. I would have gone with retards. I hate to think that any of you are capable of reproduction.

Early on in the offseason, and there's buzz that Lilljergen might make the team, where as "best d-man outside of the NHL" Chabot is seeming less and less likely to be with the Sens this year.

This despite the fact that the Senators' second best d-man, Phaneuf, would be on the Leafs' bottom pair.

No wonder Spazdops is acting out!

I'm not saying Chabot is a bust, but if he doesn't make the team, people in Ottawa will start getting nervous. There is already talk from TSN about the expectations being too high for him. Even a story about him being berated by an Ottawa coach, for not being intense enough! I really don't think he's a bust though, he'll carve out a good career for himself across a number of leagues- including a few seasons in the NHL!

You can't quite keep up with things in this thread.............. I don't know how many times I've pointed out to spatso and to Jihadists like you .......... that Ottawa already has six D men signed to NHL contracts, and after the great play of Ben Hapur late last season, and the playoffs, I don't see any need to rush Chabot into the NHL to play 6 or 7 mins a game ................ he belongs in the AHL to begin the season, and the longer he stays there the better for him, and the Senators ........... and IF he is worthy of being called up, when there's a reason for it, then let him come up.

Chabot is the best player in the world not already in the NHL... and White is #2

because, you know, no other teams have any prospects.
