Was watching SportsNet highlights last night and they were talking about the Cap problems the leafs are facing with the signing of Franson and the Clarkson suspension. Also they have a ton of contracts expiring at the end of this season and how this distraction might affect the team this season.

They were showing the leafs practising and I noticed that Phaneuf was just going through the motions and thought this was not a good example for the younger players.

Then I saw the highlights of the bluejays and Suzuki running out a fly ball and scoring all the way from first base and thought this is what a leader should be like.

cap problems disappear after waivers, players tend to perform better in contract years.

"preseason games don't matter"

jays are almost as irrelevant as the sens.

there are only 2 scenarios that could play out for the leafs this season

#1
The leafs will trade Phaneuf at the deadline when they are in last place in the conference, they will then go on a tear to end up in 9th place just missing out on the playoffs.

#2
The leafs will be 8th place at the deadline and trade several picks including their first in 2014 for a late season push, they will then go on a complete downward spiral ending up last in the conference, the team that has the leafs pick will win the draft lottery and select #1

#1 Playoffs are NOT based on Conference standings, with the only exception being the wild-card spots.

#2 Again, 8th in the conference is irrelevant with divisional play determining playoff seeding

A team could theoretically could finish 9th in the conference, but third in their division and make the playoffs

What part of the new playoff seeding format don't you understand?

Considering the team they faced was the Habs, and not... you know... the cup finalists... yes. Irrelevant. Somebody had to lose that series.

Yes, but you're fixated on the leafs finishing 8th or 9th in the Conference, instead of divisional play.

I would like to see my talking cost wear a cardigan and white converse shoes, high tops of course and white, or off white pants that stop just above the ankle

I don't buy that for a second. Typical Toronto media's "Ski is falling" b.s.

What about your favourite team? The Senators very tiny budget to me has to be a bigger concern than the Leafs cap situation. The cap went way down, yet the aren't even able to spend close to it. Melnyk is not in the greatest of shape.

EM will have nowhere to hide next season ,some pretty big players need deals .We have more than enough cap to keep everyone happy but EM needs to find some cash or sell the team

Yup. While everyone's on the "Leafs Are Screwed" train, they can always afford the cap max, and it is no doubt going up.

Melnyk needs to financially step-up if the Sens are to take that next step.

As they've made the playoffs in twelve of the past fourteen seasons (Finals once) I don't think there's a problem with how ownership in Ottawa manages the Cap. They've done quite well with developing their own players.

Since when did spending the most money result in making the playoffs on a consistent basis and having some success in the playoffs? I'm sure you can find the odd exception to the rule, but two of the highest spending teams of the past 40 years have one cup win between them.

I don't believe all the rumours that the Owner is having some financial shortcomings. He spins the fact that the Senators have a hard time finishing a season in the black, citing all the expenses they have, including the lease at the CTC that HE owns. Don't worry, he is making money, but it's always a good idea (for him) to give the perception that the team needs to go deep in the playoffs to turn a profit.

If I were a toronto sports fan, I'd be more upset that despite the MILLIONS & MILLIONS of dollars fans have spent attending pro sporting events in toronto, the number of championships is quite low.

..........................................................................................

ESPN’s Ultimate Standings, a 10-year-old ranking system of all North American professional sports franchises published annually by ESPN The Magazine, rates the Senators tops among Canadian teams and ninth overall among 122 teams in the four major professional leagues — MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL — in 2013.

ESPN used a research firm to poll 59,298 online respondents in a number of categories that include: fan relations, ownership, affordability, stadium experience, coaching and title track. Other categories that don’t include fan responses take into account how well teams turn their spending into on-field performance. There are eight categories overall, which are weighted in the final tally.

toronto finished last in the bang for buck and affordability categories.

The Winnipeg Jets came in at No. 80, while the Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers landed at No. 99, 105 and 110, respectively.

The toronto Blue Jays placed 100th; the toronto Raptors were 108th.

That's a side-argument. The fact is, Melnyk claims the team is losing millions and right now, has the 3rd lowest payroll. The other teams behind them are rebuilding clubs.

With so many contracts up, it is indeed a concern. Ottawa will have to spend more money to truly take that next step.

Spending money doesn't buy you a cup, but you do have to be higher than 28th in payroll to win it all considering the team's payroll will need to be higher next season.

Yeah the "team is losing money" but Melnyk is making money. He charges the Senators X amount of dollars for the use of the CTC which he owns................makes it easy to claim the "team" is not making money.

With an average ticket price of just over $42.00, each game brings in roughly $816,700.00 based on average attendance figures, so 45 home games would bring in $36.7 Million not including parking and concessions. And on top of that there is radio and TV revenues...........so the team makes enough to pay the players.

The New York Yankees payroll this season is $228,995,945, first in MLB
The Tampa Bay Rays payroll this season is $57,030,272, and the Yankees failed to make the playoffs, while the Rays are in the running for a wild-card spot.

They would have to raise ticket prices and average of $20.00 each to get tot he NHL average. They have to charge only what the market would be willing to pay before people spend their money somewhere else.

Ottawa has a population just around the 900,000 mark, while toronto is drawing from over 2.6 milion, almost three time the population of Ottawa.
