You still need to pay actual dollars to buy him out

$750k × 2 years is the cost to buy him out.

Yeah, that cheap.

I dont understand the point of his salary or cap hit not mattering. Okay fine, I get the part where since they don't spend to the cap what should it matter what the cap hit is. They're still a budget team though and I'm not sure I'd be trilled with a 5.5 2nd pairing dman when the team can only spend so much. On a long term deal. In his 30s. Still doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

Exactly. It’s actually a bigger deal when it comes to their budget.

40 games into this season reality will set-in for them.

Yes. Rich people need to do that. And save cap space.

I don't understand why people just don't check the numbers. Next year, the Sens are projected to pay out $57m (actual) against a $54m cap on 18 contracts. They still need to sign Hoffman and Ceci as well as 2 or 3 additional players. So, the Sens are likely to come in near $70m in actual salary dollars and around $67m on the cap. Not sure why anyone would want them to spend more?

yeah, like ones that don't give up the most shots on net in the league. Perhaps a few dmen that know how to defend might help. maybe a winger that knows how to spell intensity. They're out there.

Or perhaps an entire roster that is capable of finishing higher than 30th overall in the standings?

Yes, it did. They have several top players. Again, as I said earlier, I'd give the Oilers, a better shot at winning the cup in the next five years than 20 to 25 teams in the NHL. The Sens and Leafs included.

Senators have done better than most teams drafting players in later rounds.

In fact since the 2004 -05 lockout, the Kings, Blues & Senators received the top marks for drafting players from lower average draft positions, drafting players that have gone on to play games in the NHL, and the points generated by these players.

Ted Wyman covers this story in today's Postmedia newspapers.

I agree. But it means Chiarelli needs to pull the lever on a huge deal to bring in a #1 Dman.

just about every team that wins the cup generally has pulled in players from all avenues. Draft, trades, free agent signings. the oilers are no different.

But yes, their glaring hole is a top notch two way stud dman. But, then again, that's the same hole as the Leafs have (they've got a good young two way dman, but not yet stud), the Sens (their most talented dman is a sieve defensively), and many other teams in the league have.

it's not an easy hole to plug.

Funny, this from recent Hockey News awards. His best year's are still to come.

BOBBY ORR AWARD (Best Defenseman)
1. Erik Karlsson, Ottawa (26 points)
2. Brent Burns, San Jose (24 points)
3. Drew Doughty, Los Angeles (18 points)
4. Victor Hedman, Tampa Bay (7 points)
5. Kris Letang, Pittsburgh (6 points)

Karlsson owned the possession game for Ottawa. The discrepancy in the Sens’ play with or without him on the ice was astronomical. He joined Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey and Denis Potvin as the only D-men to finish top-10 in NHL scoring twice.

What is particularly impressive about Karlsson doing it is that he accomplished the feat without any other real talent on the team.

He may be a terrible dman, but at least he's a solid top-6 winger.

And Andersen had the better GAA, and save %, to boot.

I believe we heard this song and dance before. It seems like only a short time age you were claiming that Bernier was the key to your finding your inner Nelson Mandella. There is no evidence to suggest Andersen is any better as a goalie than either Bernier or Mandella. But we all enjoy Leaf summer talk. It has been a little better and a bit more over the top than previous years. But, it is certainly entertaining.

What? If you ignore him having been a number 1 before acquisition and his stats, then sure.
