We'll see how the current group does.

But at least there's the illusion of wanting to compete... and not dumping futures to save a few bucks.

Didn't the leafs trade like 5 prospects for Grabner?

A bunch of underperforming prospects... to open up contract spots to sign guys they can dump for picks.

Islanders save cap and $$, at the cost of taking on contracts.

Leafs take on cap and $$ to eventually turn underwhelming prospects into picks that can be used for more prospects.

No, the "my niche asset might be worth a middle-round pick that my new scouting staff might be able to use better than the old one did when they picked those guys that didn't pan out who we then traded to make room for these niche assets" theory.

alternatively, the "give the scouting staff another kick at the can" theory.

or more simply, decent asset management... unlike trading a future piece to unload $2M that would be off the books afer next year anyways

Yes. Like Matthias. Not necessarily a good player, but the kind of guy teams like in the playoffs. Fills that niche.

In the continuing joke that is the Senator's future, their AHL team managed a whopping 6 shots in tonight's game.

And no, the game was not cut short halfway through the first.

I doubt very much that Greening and IF they include a prospect, are the "future" that the Senators are moving towards.

Still only five losses in regulation after 22 games, only Montreal has fewer.

Ottawa is second in the Division, while your leafs are basement dwellers.

12 wins 10 losses with advanced stats saying they are a bottom 4 possession team in close games, bottom 2 overall. I'm optimistic.

The leafs traded prospects Taylor Beck, Carter Verhaeghe, Matt Finn and Tom Nilsson Christopher Gibson, who was the starting goalie for the Marlies at times last year, was traded.

WOW, looks like the leafs traded "futures" for Grabner.

Funny when the shoe is on the other foot, some leaf fans can justify anything.

Always better to be in a playoff spot at American Thanksgiving.

Stats show a 10-year trend that 77.3% of teams in a playoff spot at this time of the season, remain there until the end of the season.

Better situation than the leafs.

How on earth do you continually go out of your way to prove how clueless you are? Did the leafs do that deal to save money?

Seems weird that when the leafs were in a playoff spot at American thanksgiving and the sens were not that the sens were in a better spot because they had (supposedly) better prospects and more cap space (even though they didn't have the ability to use it)....but now that the leafs have more space (and an ability and willingness to use it) and clearly have better prospects it's the playoff position that dictates who's in a better spot now.

Shawn Matthias, highly coveted playoff player.

That's the type of clutch performance all GM's are seeking.

He's been brutal. He making over 2 mil I think. Boyes has been useless as well. Pap is at least scoring a bit

He's best suited for the wing, and really brings nothing special to the table.

That's Where he's playing. He has zero puck skills, his hands are make of stone... But he's doing ok (read mediocre) job on working the boards.

I imagine a playoff team will be willing to take a flyer in the guy for like 5th or somthing. Not expecting much.

Given his skills and his past production teams are usually better off going with what they have instead of adding someone new to the locker room.

Of course, at least he's only signed 1 year. GM Vantel was willing to offer him 4years / $14 million.

That's the point though... nobody is saying the Leafs are going to be getting a 1st or 2nd for a guy like Matthias... simply that the Leafs wanted contract spots to get guys like him, to replace the underwhelming prospects they traded away. They've got faith in their scouting.

They didn't trade away those prospects so that they could get Grabner.

Taking the contract was the price that the Islanders had to pay to get rid of Grabner's $$$.

In the Ottawa case, they'd be trading away a prospect to sweeten the pot, for a team to take on Greening. Teams aren't likely to look at Ottawa's prospect pool and choose their throw-aways.

Sometimes teams just want to add a physical presence, going into the playoffs.

Well if they watch the tape of Calgary / Vancouver then they'll target someone else.
