Ottawa Senators goaltending prospect Robin Lehner backstopped the Binghamton Senators to the Calder Cup championship, winning the playoff most valuable player award as well.

Lehner did not start the playoffs, and once Binghamton fell behind 3 games to 1 in the opening round of the playoffs, he started game 5 and never looked back.

They won the final three games of that series, all in overtime, and Lehner also stopped a penalty shot in overtime in one of those three wins.

The Senators plans at this time is for him to return to the AHL and play an entire season, as it will be better for him and the organization in the long run and Anderson just signed a five year contract and will most likely play around 60 games for the Senators.

- Doppleganger

I think Lehner is a solid young goalie. Actually, I question the Sens' decision to sign Anderson to a 5-year contract because you'd figure he'll end up dropping off before his contract is up, and Lehner will likely become the starter when he's ready to stick at the NHL level.

Then again, it is Bryan Murray...

The contract is not that expensive for a starter, at $3,187,500 Million per year, and it is "trade friendly" if and when the time comes to promote Lehner to the Starters job, and get some asset(s) in return for Anderson at the trade deadline a few years down the road (for example).

We've all seen numerous young goaltenders take a step backwards when handed the starters job to early in their development, and I'd hope Murray has seen this a few times in his long NHL career, and is determined not to make that mistake.

I would tend to say that the Leafs are in a better position because they have already cleaned the house.

- KovalevOnIce

And now that the Senators have cleaned house, they are now moving forward from their "Low Point" of last season.

Lots of prospects in the Cupboard, but a couple of seasons before a playoff spot is an achievable goal.

Kaberle is without a doubt worth a first rounder.

Can you show one instance, when a "Vet" has been traded for a 1st rounder at the trade deadline?

Not two first round picks and a second...................................a prospect (Joe Colborne) the Bruins' first-round pick in 2011(30th overall) and a conditional second-round draft pick in 2012.

Great return for the leafs on a player beyond his best before date.

So what do you think Alfredsson would be worth? Clearly no more than a second round pick, right?

Good question. Defensemen tend to command a higher price at the deadline than forwards do, even crappy ones like Kaberle did............that was a great deal.

Alfredsson would command at least as much as Fisher did, if not a little more.

That will depend on what he does this year. Not too many teams are going to take a risk on him if he isn't putting up at least a 60 point pace, especially with that extra year.

He sure as hell would not get what Fisher did, who was almost a decade younger, and had another year on his contract either way.

I think Alfredsson would fetch a first from a playoff team. Or a 2nd that conditionally became a first and a low-level prospect.

So, less than that crappy Dman Kaberle, you think?

Makes sense I guess. Usually, when teams go to sign vets, they want guys that are still playing pretty good hockey, and usually prefer guys that are good leaders. You know, guys that add good character to a team. Not guys like Alfredsson. The last thing they need is some clown shooting pucks at the other team's hall of famers.

Well Boston evidently overpayed for Kaberle given his production in the playoffs. The kings also overpayed for Penner and the flyers overpayed for Versteeg. Alfredsson is much older but arguably more prestigious a pickup than any of those guys. There's a decent chance someone will overpay and give a straight up 1st, maybe more.

I think the market for Alfredsson really depends on the flames' plans for Iginla. If the younger, better Iggy goes at the deadline, Alfredsson might be the desperation consolation prize for a PO team like Nashville. If Iggy doesn't, I don't know that many people freak out for him 1st round pick style.

I actually don't think they trade him.

It's funny, after all the chirping from Sens fans about the Leafs not truly rebuilding, there's a good chance the pickup of Anderson, and keeping Alfredsson, may actually keep them in the 5th to 7th pick range, essentially avoiding ever picking any truly elite players, as a couple of their younger guys pitch in a little more just as Alfredsson retires. It could hurt them in the long run, big time.

You don't need to be selecting in the top 5 or 7 picks to get a "truly elite" player in the draft. Alfredsson was selected 133rd overall.

I'm not sure I'd consider him "truly elite" anyway. He certainly had a few very good years (only 3 over 80 points), but the majority of his career was as a 70 point guy. At best. Is that really "elite"?

With alfie signed for next season and him pretty much saying this will be his last year, i don't think there will be much of a trade market for alfie. He's looked good so far, but its a long season and he's had injury problems pretty much his whole career.

4 seasons with 80 points or more, a Calder trophy, and .97 PPG is pretty good in most peoples books to be considered "Elite".

Of course you'll never see him (a Senator) as an "elite" player, but if he were a leaf, he'd be one hands down.

So what if he was elite, is Jagr still considered elite? How about Bertuzzi or Gonchar?

If the problems surrounding Semin and the caps are as bad as the blogosphere reports, I could see Semin going out in a blockbuster to bring back a solid Dman and role players, and then a pitch in Ottawa's direction to nab Alfie for a playoff run.

As I say though, that's only going off of reports that Semin and the caps are desperate to part ways.

based on?

both are around ppg players, captains of their team, alfie is a more all-round player (playing more on the PK).

I seriously think Chiarelli did burke a favor after raping him on the Kessel deal.
