Rangers Sign Alexis Lafrenière. Good signing? Alexis Lafrenière 2years x $2.325M ($4.65M total) signed by NYR. VERY low AAV, but only 2 years is a huge risk.

Why is 2 years such a huge risk? Basically this is what everyone expected.

Why no story on Auston Matthews new contract? Or are sources still talking about Nylander for JP Pageau?

2 years huge risk? Really? You got him under 2.5 for two years

Been improving each year and this will be his prove it bridge. Worst case he stays a third line 2nd PP guy and for that cap hit well worth it. The upside is huge. Worst case he is what he is. And that contract is tradable if it comes to that

Fantastic deal!!
2 Rocket Richards, Calder and a Heart. More goals (299) than any other NHL players since he entered the league during the 2016-17 season, including the likes of Ovi, McD, & Draisaitl, despite having a “down” year statistically on 2022-23. On top of that he….wait this is not the Auston Matthews signs contract extension blog??

His Toronto source is still peddling Nylander for Pageau rumours. There was also stories of Treliving trading Morgan Rielly because he doesn't like him. Don't forget Karlsson being an E4. Pretty connected to the Leafs...

And yet... you're both here everyday reading it on HockeyBuzz. Good grief.. get a life and find something else to do besides female dog about Ek's latest rumors. You two are both jackasses.

Yet no post about Matthews? Haha you truly are a clown. Pathetic really. Yet when you do post about him you will take credit and source yourself. Maybe you should something else yourself instead of sourcing yourself!

Then go find something else to read if it's so bad you moron.

I can’t believe he wasn’t offer sheeted for more than this based on potential alone. Kind of tells me that other GMs have lost faith in him.

Terrible deal for lafreniere to accept and could be a career killer if NYR won’t play him top six.

I don't know why, but offer sheets are so rare in hockey. Maybe with speed being so important in today's game, the concerns about his skating were enough to kill interest. Not to mention, teams would have to give up draft picks as well. Who knows?

Has nothing to do with losing faith...Any GM would take him at that salary its all about a gentleman's agreement not to poach each others RFAs. What is he 21 22 yrs old and he has been one of Rangers leading 5 on 5 players the last 2 yrs. Career killer at 22????

Risk? You are aware AF just finished his ELC? This is called your standard RFA (with no negotiation rights) bridge deal.

Happens every year to nearly every player, not named Connor McDavid or Austin Matthews, coming off his ELC.

I do believe the risk being implied here is that AF could end up costing the team significantly more in two years if he plays to his pedigree. Its the lack of term that is the risk, not the deal itself.

What about Caulfield? 5, 43 and 36...8 years @7.85m

Lafrenière 21, 31 and 39...

Many other examples besides Caulfield, but the argument can be made that Cole played less games (which is not necessarily a positive). Caulfield even had more opportunity in Montreal (more ice time, better situations), which means he should of performed better than he did for that money.

So bridge deal for a #1 pick playing 3rd line minutes, I take that NY doesn't really have that much confidence in him, well not as much as other teams do with their potential star players.

If you project a player coming off an ELC as a sure star, then you can go 8 years at a higher cap hit and lock in some UFA years. That happens.

But in most cases you do a standard bridge, still expires as an RFA, and you buy more time to see if the player progresses. Happens most of the time. Heck, Oilers bridged Bouchard on the same day. Byram did a bridge. Necas did a bridge. Literally dozens more.

Then you also have to examine how this fits the cap. Even if NYR wanted to sign him for 7 or 8 years, they don't have the cap space. Just like the Oilers and Bouchard. So without any context or analysis we're told this is a big risk??

Has nothing to do with confidence. Rangers had no cap $$ to work with this year.

This is a very tradable contract now.
I don't know why they are giving up on Alex so quickly. A team with the right assets will be very happy.

Just the tiniest bit of homework required for you to realize that NYR have basically no cap space to work with this year. In 2 years, he will be paid.
