With the NHL and NHLPA in discussions about next year's salary cap range, my sense is the union remains open to more than the baked-in $1M bump to $83.5M but won't make concessions to push the ceiling higher.

It will likely be at least a month before anything is finalized.

What Gary Bettman doesn’t want anyone to know is that he’s getting big time heat from the most influential owners in the NHL to raise the Upper Limit beyond $1M. So don’t tell anyone…

So if I have this straight, the players want to bump the cap. So they can complain about escrow more.

The Escrow Debt was as high as $1.1B will be down to $70M by end of season. Once paid off, the Upper Limit will rise about $12M between 2024 and 2026 within confines of 6% Escrow. Raising cap now by $3M will NOT lead to higher escrow, it will smooth out higher Upper Limit.

Bolded- That's a pretty big jump.

I hate to be an “I told you so” but I’ve said for a year that Matthews does a 3 year deal.

I'm thinking 3 or 4 yr extension if he goes that route. 5 years would take him to age 31 (turning 32). Might be seen entering his 'decline years'.

If I'm his agent I want him getting the last big 8 year extension when he's 29 or 30.

If the High Evolutionary could create entire new humanoid animal species and a space station made out of living tissue, why couldn't he repair some raccoon scratches on his face? Totally unrealistic talking raccoon movie man.

From last blog:

We lost because of one word: Bobrovsky.

Certainly reliable goaltending at critical times came back to bite them in the backside again. Frankly if we want to hold Dubas accountable for anything, it's sort of that. Andersen had lost his confidence here - most of us knew he'd be fine in Carolina - and Campbell was a longshot to be the next Tim Thomas; Samsonov and Murray were always a HUGE roll of the dice and Murray's selling point was his playoff experience, but when the opportunity arose, they gave it to Woll - so why was Murray even here?

But really their downfall was that Bobrovsky has been otherworldly. They were in tight in the dirty areas. They played in front of him and around him and deflected pucks and got rebounds. Not as many as Tampa because Florida plays much dirtier around their net and in the playoffs that's "good defense" . . sometimes . . if the refs decide you're allowed to. Outside of a few stretches in a few games for the most part Florida has been outplayed all playoffs. Boston was better in 5 games, Toronto was better in 3 (or 4 depending on the metric). Carolina has been the better team in all 3 - although I will say that Florida was better through the last 3 OT periods of game 1. Florida didn't score their goals by crashing the net and being stronger. Half of their shots were just that - shots - that would not have beaten Bob.

So Boston, Toronto and Carolina are all getting goalied. Boston was ahead 2-1 in the series when Bob came in - and granted he got bombed in his first game, but then he found his footing and here we are.

People female dog that Toronto was too soft or Carolina is too soft. Was Boston? How much do you need to blow it up and how much do you need to tweak some things and get a better goalie. What Bob is doing is generational this year; you won't see it for another 10-20 years.
- Monkeypunk

And this is why I'm so opposed to throwing huge dollars to get an 'elite' goalie - because Bob's performance is lighting in a bottle. I mean hard to say that the Leafs would have won this year vs Florida with Helly or Saros in net vs Sammy and Woll isnt' it? Boston had elite goaltending all year and lost to Bob. Freddy has been lights out vs Florida and they are about to lose.

I don't think you can have "elite" goaltending, offense AND D in a cap era without one (or 2) of those 3 pieces is players playing way beyond their cap hit due to Entry Level deals or lightning in a bottle.

I feel like good goaltending is enough and you need a good balance of elite of F and D with the POS players sprinkled around the line up to make space for the elite talent.

The Leafs spending a bunch of money on an elite goalie just doesn't feel like it makes the difference to me if they can get a really good tandem with Woll as the back half of it in place.

And your bang on - Florida could very easily have lost in the 1st 2 rounds - they aren't this world beater, their goalie is right now for sure but even the great Jesus Price on a heater couldn't win the cup alone.

Vegas in 5.

It pains me to think either the Vegas or Florida fanbase will get a cup but my dislike for the Panthers > Vegas.

The only way Trevling is going to have any meaningful control over the team is if his father buys shares and fires Shanahan.
