RIP Mr. Hull.

One of his favorite lines was "His wife made him a millionaire, She took the rest".
I did meet him a few times and was always happy to be around people. He always had a smile on his face.

He loved the fans from what I could tell and would go out of his way to make sure everyone got a picture. One of my favorite pieces in my autograph collection is one of his sticks signed that was shaved down where his thumb would rest.

My head is exploding reading about destinations and "probable" asks on Hawk "assets."

I guess it is starting bother me are how the scribes are spitballing' the asks (just like us).
Today's is Leafs interest in Jake McCabe and how Davidson wold want a second and a prospect.

The only have 2024 second and I doubt they sending Matthew Knies in a package for Jake McCabe.
I guess if there was demand for McCabe he has value but this much? Nah!

Maybe the send Fraser Minten the big rugged C/W our way but two assets for McCabe?

Hope springs eternal.

I guess I expect most Hawk trade movement to be coming for the addition of Cap to facilitate deals by taking contracts and players if the our two keynote speakers decide they have laryngitis.

My memory of him is that he was a great player, and a guy who used to beat the crap out of his wife.

The latter is more important. The Hawks should not have hired him as an "ambassador". People were all upset about the Beach affair, but few said diddly about the re-hiring of a wife beater leaving a stain on the team's "brand". Hypocrisy.

I saw Hull live at Maple Leaf Gardens live three times as a kid and one time we waited on Wood street behind the Gardens to get autographs. I managed to get a number and didn’t think I’d get Bobby’s as the team was yelling at him to get on the bus. But he signed until the last kid received his signature including myself. even though I received that autograph over 55 years ago I still remember what he wrote. To my good friend Paul, keep your head up, Bobby Hull 9.

Yeah he was my hero as a kid, but he wasn’t a good human.

He was awesome to watch play the game, for sure. His combination of speed and power was something else.

Bobby Hull would pull over on the Eisenhower Xway if someone recognized him in the car next to him and sign autographs if that's what was wanted. Time limits didn't matter to him at scheduled appearances, he would sign until nobody was left no matter what time it was. Having said that, behind the scenes there was a down side as well.
For better or worse, there will never be another Bobby Hull.

All of us possess good and bad qualities - except for Paulie; he's Canadian and is therefore unfailingly nice. Bobby Hull seemed like his good and bad qualities were more extreme than in most of us.

Rip Bobby Hull

I dreaded when the Hawks would play the Wings and dismantle them with Bobby's strength, Mikita's stealth and Espo's puck stopping ability. Good times! They played many times back-to-back in each of their arenas. Many fans were bussed to these back-to-backs and had a great time cheering on their teams!

This is kinda of a shock, maybe a startle of my own mortality.

I saw Bobby at one Hockey card show take off his Stanley cup ring after a fan asked if they could put it on.

The six team league was able to have players who were STILL able to be above the level of the mean, and with six teams there was no talent dilution (expect for the players buried in the top clubs (Montreal Toronto Detroit) amateur & farm systems.

No matter what roadblocks Bobby placed in his own path, he still changed the game in many ways, and I loved that he was never interested in more than being Bobby hull and telling you about Bobby Hull.

It was good they let him come back as an ambassador.

I can tell you the dicey "bad stories" later.

I just posted this in the other blog:
Boqvist had concussion issue’s while playing in London.

...and three in Sweden prior to his selection.

I wanna revisit that 2018 draft again.

A few here had mentioned they tagged the redhead Noah Dobson as a possible "safe" selection for the Hawks; I remember also that others desired forward Oliver Wahlstrom.

I spend far too much of my time trying to attempt to get in the heads of the NHL scouting staffs long range and why they do what they do.

I do not expect I am ever close to understanding, but I do know the past drafts and players influence the future ideas in selecting building blocks.

When you look at the 2018 Draft you see after the one guaranteed stud defender, Rasmus Dahlin teams starting after the forward barrage, Quinn Hughes, Adam Boqvist and Evan Bouchard off the board 7, 8, and 10.

Right now as far as I am concerned these three are busts as all around NHLers at this point. I can praise their skating, and offensive abilities, but they all are subpar defenders, and would want any playing for me.
So why suddenly did they get high billing and chosen so quickly?

and not Dobson?

I think I will guess the fact that in the year after his selection in the year before 2017, Cale Makar had teams looking for rookie ofeenseman that were possible comparable.

To me, that has got to be it.

Everyone knew Dobson had "a good frame and will continue to grown into it and get bigger, and surely he will become less shy playing like a larger guy. Already better than most “Q” defenders at using his mobility, reach, stick, and to have his stick on the right side of the puck carrier. Deceptively fast and always willing to lug the biscuit up ice. Because he is bigger and his stride is so fluid, he catches you off guard with how fast he can accelerate and then surprises again when he executes at top speed. Jumps up from the blue line deep in to the attack zone and has the speed to get himself back up ice." (My player profile.)

But everyone knew he needed more time, was going to have to percolate in Quebec Jr.
and that he had to improve his "head" speed. And he wasn't really a Seabrook type. His game was fairly vanilla in so far as he lacked snarl or bite, and that also put some doubts out there.

Noah Dobson lasted until slot 12.

It had more to do with arrival immediacy and development than fact you had a very good chance to draft a bigger solid balanced all around defenseman.

To me, the biggest guffaw was the tabs reach at slot three to draft Jesperi Kotkaniemi.

If anyone in the Blackhawk organization knew they were passing on a Brady Tkachuk, we should have offered them BOTH of our first rounders and moved up to three.
This was no hindsight ida, as I clamored about it then.

I am pretty sure the Habs could have gotten Jesperi Kotkaniemi with pick eight.

We all hope no one does things that is wrong, like beating up women. We’re all judged on the good and bad we do. It’s unfortunate Hull’s memory is tainted by the bad things he did.

Hell of a take when it comes to beating your wife and assaulting a police officer that's trying to stop you.

Exactly.

Great player. Awful person. You can celebrate one while acknowledging the other.

I remember the Time Magazine cover with Bobby shirtless on the farm. He could have been in a Charles Atlas ad.

I also remember him playing with a broken jaw and wearing a cage, and finally had enough with Bugsy Watson, and fought and beat the crap out of him.

Unfortunately #51 against the Rangers was a school night and had to listen on the radio, although listening to Lloyd Petit was never a bad thing.

I left a story about Bobby Hull in the Leafs thread, but here's another.

As a teenager, I worked in a department store, Towers, in Belleville, Ontario. Interesting enough I worked beside the Patriarch of the Crawford family, Floyd. World Champion, Gold Medal at the Olympics, son's in the NHL, Stanley Cup winning coach son with Colorado.......but I digress. Bobby's mother and father would often come into Towers and they would show off Bobby's Stanley Cup ring. They were so proud of their sons. It seemed like the father, never went anywhere without that ring.

Bobby would often be seen, in the summer months, at diners around town. Everybody knew him by his nickname "Jet". He would strike up long conversations and acted like you were one of his best friends. Always great stories and laughs. I remember ordering one of his custom made hockey sticks, that he was partner in the business, Fin-Am. Great stick, but pricey back in the early '80's. They cost $50, but were almost unbreakable. During one of my Ball Hockey League games, I came out after the game and Bobby saw the stick. He stopped me and asked me my impression of the stick? I gave him my honest opinion and he took the stick and autographed it. He loved the game.

In the later years, he went back into farming, just north of Belleville, in the Read village area. I knew someone that worked for him and they weren't impressed with his business practices towards his employees. He did have a dark side to him, with rumoured womanizing and spousal abuse. Bobby kept up his image in public. I remember him browsing around a department store, in Watertown, NY, when he recognized me from living in the same area, and he came over for a chat. He never forgot a face.

He was a childhood hero of mine but as many heroes in our young lives we're often disappointed, It's a shame his boozing and his practice of domestic violence tarnished his legacy beyond repair as far as I'm concerned.

We should be so lucky.

All Bobby Hull ever wanted to be was ... Bobby Hull.

The opportunity to continue to be in the hockey legends light rally was what he wanted ...to continue to be Bobby Hull.
