You said the Islanders would be contenders last season too and were way off. The Metro isn't a weak division. Lou has made plenty of bad decisions that are manifesting now.

Finally after 3 previous claims about NYI being the best in the Metro from Feb 1 to end of season you've dropped that tidbit. As we all know, there were 3 other Metro teams better than them during this timeframe.

In reality, they weren't really that impressive to end the season. And they likely aren't challenging for 1st in the division. I mean a couple weeks ago you pegged them finishing 4th in the division and maybe grabbing a wildcard spot. Now they are challenging for 1st?

Seems like you are all over the map on this team. Too bad they didn't acquire JT Miller. That came out as an E4 and then Miller signed with Vancouver a few hours later.

Whaaaat?

This dude is talked about like he’s a superstar, but has barely eclipsed 60 points since his rookie season. That’s an awful lot of $$$ for someone who can’t get 20 goals in a year

I expect him to produce more in a less defensive system. He is obviously an elite skater and puck handler. His shot volume is rather limited for an elite offensive talent.

True but this is like telling the vets and coach Lane Lambert that this is his team (as highest paid forward) and coach the offense around Barzal. If you didn't realize this was the order of the past, then it should be now. I think the vets and the young core will play well together.

He's a Matt Duchene puck hog with very little finish. Flies around the perimeter like Crosby used to but then doesn't have the vision to set up the score. As an Isles fan I would have been fine with him being traded. They could barely score when he had help. Now he has no help but a lot more money.

Well, yeah. We just gave a turnover machine 9 million f-ing dollars. How would he not sign that contract in two seconds?

You obviously don’t have the pleasure of watching him on a nightly basis. Because of the system he plays in and the teammates he has to play with, might be the most underrated talent in todays game. Elite skater. Elite hands. You put this guy on a team with talent he gets 100 points a year

Steal in 3 years time if he can score 20-24goals/80-90 points per season over the next 5-6years. With the cap going up i from the 2024 season onwards, it’ll help with other contract negotiations when the best players cap hit is 10% or less.

I watch him a lot. And yes. He's a world class talent. So was Jason Spezza. Figure it out kid. Its how quickly Austin Mathews figured out that NOT turning the puck over, and committing to good defense actually created offensive chances for him. Barzal hasn't figured that out. (I hate the leafs)

That's the problem with the contract...73.2m over 8y for a "might be" could strap a team for years.

You don’t watch him then. He’s figured it out guy. He just plays with 3rd line crumbs who are useless. Wish you could spell Auston Matthews though

I’m fine with it. The kid is a helluva talent. Is incredibly durable. Might be a few million more than I might have given him but he’s by far our best player. Looking forward to seeing him under a coach who will give him a little more offensive freedoms
