Adding zeitsev would certainly help the yotes loose, with the price for Chych down to 3, now is the time for dorion to make the trade...being patient is fine, but waiting too long is also bad

as for what to write about, Greig, how the other sens prospects did at the WJ.

AZ needs to spend as little as possible this year, so his 4.5M cap hit is something the Yotes want...as its only 2.5M cash out with his 2M bonus paid on July 1st.

Equivalent of three 1st round picks/prospects.....so 2023 and 2024 1st rounders and say Lassi Thomson or JBD, both of which were 1st round picks. As i wrote in the piece, equivalent of three 1st rounders....in terms of talent!

Good post.

Is an ask for Chychrun of three quality first round equivalents excessive? I don't think so as long as Pinto, Sanderson or Grieg are not included. Should not discount the huge benefit that comes with the cap hit on the Chychrun contract.

Yesterday NHL VP Bill Daly said that revenues have accelerated far better than expected and the cap will pop up a year earlier than projected (summer of 2024). Guessing it will likely be somewhere in the $92 to $96m range.

Calgary wants to move a Dman for a forward. If the Sens can move Zaitsev, is Tanev still an option in addition to Chychrun?

World Junior Gold would be nice to mention along with how the Sens prospects showed. I noticed that there was an almost complete blackout of coverage of the gold medal win by Canada on TSN 1200 as well as on this "hockey site".

I had jokingly posted on your previous blog that the Sens should trade DeBrincat to get Chychrun or Tanev or some such but they really can't do that now. They've moved Paul and Brown and Formenton might be problematic so they are well and truly screwed as far as depth goes. Maybe Gambrell and Kelly and Kastelec will fill the void. (sarcasm alert) Oh yeah! I forgot Joseph and Watson. I like Watson but he's not filling the hole left by Paul and Brown.

Greig showed well at the juniors but I don't know if he's ready for the NHL just yet unless you want to rush him. If Pinto can stay healthy and plays well that's a big plus. Hopefully they can afford to pay him next year once they cough up the 9 million for DeBrincat.

On the bright side if they get a Chychrun or a Tanev or even a Weeger they should challenge for a wild card spot this coming season and apparently their system is so jam packed with high end prospects that they won't be needing any more first round draft picks so they can just give them away for one of these guys. (sarcasm alert)

Great read as always. Will be interesting to see what happens. I still think Chychrun would be a great add. I think there might be some mix and matching having to occur as he is a left shot but the calibre of Chychrun (talent, cap hit, local factor) does not come along often.

If I am Dorion, I wouldn't rush any Zub deal. Let him play the year, see results and evaluate in the off-season. If a guy like Chychrun is added, a guy like Zub might need to be moved and replaced with a cheaper option such as Thomson or JBD (if they are not dealt). Don't get me wrong, I love the Zub but he is not a cornerstone d-man for any franchise.

Adding a solidified d-man before training camp would make this team a playoff contender.

Also interesting the comments from Daley that the cap will go up in 2 years. Wonder if you will see an influx of 1-year deals to get to more cap space a year later. Bit of risk for the player if they get hurt but certainly could be a work around for cap tight teams.

The cap increase is really something that Dorion needs to think through. He got an elite talent like DeBrincat for a very reasonable trade cost. Not many teams had the cap space that enabled them to complete a deal.

Next summer there will be multiple teams thinking they have another $10m. they can add to their cap in 12 months and they will be looking to bridge elite players into the following season. This summer has been clearly a buyers market as there are very few teams in the market able to add players. Next summer should shift to a sellers market. If the Sens need to move an elite player there will be lots of bidders and they should get a very good return.

You’re whole blog is built on a completely nonsensical proposition. Chychrun is not going to refuse to come to training camp. He is under contract for 3 more years. If he doesn’t show up, he doesn’t get paid and doesn’t play anywhere. He’s not going to risk three of his prime years trying to prove a point.

Could he publicly request a trade? Yes. Could that lower his trade value by weakening the Coyotes position. Yes. But there is no scenario where he doesn’t show up to training camp.

Either way, Formenton, Lass Thompson, and two first rounders. That’s an easy win for Dorian and gets the coyotes what they want it. Wish Dorian and Armstrong would stop dilly dallying and just sign it.

Thanks!
I know Sanderson and Pinto are off limits....Greig....I haven't haven't been told either way. As for Calgary, I will be doing some digging the rest of the week.....as for Daly.....yes....great news for Ottawa considering Debrincat has his deal up in 2 years!

Thanks for the post and I will try to post a few things on what you asked! As for Weeger, he ain't going anywhere, I that I know! But agreed, the next 2 weeks...time is to strike now for Dorion......DJ and PD know they have to be contending for the playoffs come March.

I was thinking - should I put a sarcasm alert with that last line? Na everybody will know I'm being sarcastic. When people make the statement "Something or bust" they mean you're going for broke. If I would have said "Stanley Cup or bust" it would make sense but I said "Challenge for a wild card spot or bust" thinking no one would consider that to be a serious enough goal to gamble the house on, but alas I was wrong. It wasn't even "Wild card spot or bust" but just "Challenge for a wild card spot or bust". I've gone and fixed that now.

Sorry, Kevin. I'm kind of surprised that you of all people now think that Dorion took some kind of pill and is now magickly a genius. We'll find out next summer how brilliant this off season really was. Actually the people nominating Dorion for GM of the year won't ever see anything just like the people in Edmonton who cheered the Hall/Larsson trade and the two draft picks for Griffin Reinhadt, two of the worst trades in NHL history, never said "Gee we could have had Barzal or Chabot plus Aho or Carlo and instead we have Griffin friggin Reinhardt".

I find it difficult to understand how badly you can screw things up and still have people nominating you for GM of the year. Anyway for now the system is so jam packed with high end prospects (sarcasm alert) that you won't be needing any more first round picks (sarcasm alert) so give them away for a Dman and everybody will cheer. Throw in one of those high end prospects while you're at it (sarcasm alert). People will cheer even louder but just remember to hold off on the announcement till the last minute so everyone will know that you stood your ground and bargained hard and got another fantastic deal (sarcasm alert).

Everybody loves a young team and elite prospects. The future is what dreams are made of. When you are a fan of a non contending team it is your dreams that sustain your interest in the team. Problem is fans fall in love with their young teams. They become frozen around expectations that may be forever in never coming true.

Rebuilds are the product of crash and burn followed by extended patience through disappointments as young teams learn that regular season results do not easily translate into playoff success.

The Stanley Cup is almost always won by a veteran team that can play elite defensive hockey.

Are the Sens cup contenders? The answer is obvious. They are not. But they have decided that they are beyond the rebuilding, stockpiling, drafting and developing phase of rebuild. Have they gone too soon? Perhaps.

I think we all agree that this team could be in the mix for a playoff spot. But, that is doubtful unless they upgrade the defensive roster.

Nice blog kev welcome back.

Good comments too...from the glowing love for the GM to the more pragmatic who haven't forgotten his numerous screw ups and bad signings.

Dorion has had a decent summer. We will see how things play out.

I'm comfortable with Grieg, a first and JBD. To me and what I saw at the World Juniors....Grieg is a Lazar. Seems everyone has an opinion on what this guy will be...that's mine. I haven't seen enough out of JBD to be excited. I HAVE seen Lassi Thompson play a couple times. I would not be giving him away.

I will agree that our prospect pool seems good at the moment and trading 1st round pick or even 2 would not be the worst thing. I still think Dorion should stand pat and wait.

Additionally I'll agree with the AZ poster. jacob has given no indication that he wants a trade or will no report for camp....so...that's just bogus.

I thought the same about Grieg (another Lazar) until I watched a few of the WJC games. Lazar was a young buzz saw with lots of motion but no real finish. Grieg plays a serious defensive game. The fact that he can also score makes him a lot more than I thought he was. We need to see how he competes against bigger, harder bodies when he goes up against NHL talent.

I was impressed by the report by Bob MacKenzie saying some scouts at the WJC were saying they would not give up Grieg for Chychrun on a one for one deal.

I agree we have not seen a report stating that Chychrun has actually said he will not report for camp. However, we have seen multiple, different sourced reports indicating that he does expect to be traded.

THIS!

You're telling me Arizona is feeling the heat to move a guy with 3 years left on his contract that is one of the best valued contracts in the league? Nonsense.

Chychrun will cost alot and whoever gets him will pay the price to acquire him. Don't think for a second that Armstrong is in a difficult position. He is in a position of strength and is driving the bus in any negotiation. Time is on his side with that contract length.

Personally, I can't wait to see how the trade shakes out when it happens. It's going to be quite the haul for the Yotes.

Just like Chicago got a fair and good return for DeBrincat.

Markets have a remarkable ability to carve out fair value on an asset.

If you have the assets to make the deal, the market will ensure you pay a fair price. If you get the asset in competitive bidding the outcome is fair to buyer and seller..

Nobody is is more redundant to the discussion than those who think that every trade needs to be evaluated in terms of a winner and loser. Dumb how many folks wanted to declare Wilson and winner and crucify Dorion after the Karlsson trade.

I love reading the national media with its Toronto centric perspective. From the National Post a few years ago evaluating the Karlsson trade:

"I’ll leave it to others to analyze the finer points of the trade. What stands out, and what has been the obvious impending result as the Senators slow-marched to this conclusion, is that the team has traded a franchise icon, at 28 years old, for whatever it could salvage. That almost never happens in the National Hockey League, and the fact that it did is an indictment of the franchise, and of Melnyk himself."
