This is a make or break year for Comtois, if he is still around come September. Eakins' comments in April about Max's work ethic don't bode well for his future here. He did raise his game a bit down the stretch and had a good showing in the Worlds, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him shipped out as part of a package for a more established winger or D-man. I still think he's a potential middle six NHL'er, but after the last 12 months a change of scene might do him good.

Re: we were having such a good conversation. So I copied and pasted it for you 😊

He's been declining for the past 3 yrs.. I'm of the Belechik thought mode.. get out a yr or 2 early rather than wait.. Lots of chatter already how he's overrated as is...

Get what you can and move onto other fixes available. If we aren't going to be as good as most pundits think.. me not of that mindset.. what's the harm of adding more picks and or prospects and letting a Stolli / vet / Dostal roll in net..

I personally think we are going to be in the mix for a spot at the dance.. with Z and McTavish patrolling the middle and a few adds... watch out.

Manly I think our differences in this situation come from our way of thinking of goaltending. In my opinion Gibson isn't washed up. Now I have a facts supporting this opinion. Like the fact that the Ducks have been horrible over the last 4 years. Mostly because of the rebuild. Or the fact that goalies don't age as harsh as skaters. They stay in the goal crease. You see alot of goaltenders still playing into there late 30's. They usually decline in the amount of games they play. Or the fact that Gibson usually plays better under meaningful game like playoff games. This has shown up in the past in previous playoffs series. Or another fact that Gibson Has been tring to improve his mechanics. He's been tring to stay on his skates more and should make him more durable. All that diving around and break dance moves takes alot out of him. Staying upright should conserve energy leading to more sustainable success. Another fact. Gibson Hates losing. I Iike this quality. You seem to think he's upset with the Ducks. But he wants to win. A quality I wish more of Ducks players and management had. Last fact. We have no proven successor. There are a couple of talented prospects. But I'd like to see at least a full season as a backup before claiming they're the heir apparent. Now Dostal I think is a NHL quality Goalie from what I've seen. But how good. Thats Still up in the air.

Now i keep telling you these things dozer. But those stats or analytics you keep quoting me are useless. The fact that the Ducks were actually tring to lose makes the stats faulty. Just bad data plugged into and flawed algorithm. It all means nothing. When the Ducks try tank it throws everything off. The Numbers, Roster decisions, Complete level of the players are all off. There really isn't a reliable way to gage this team statically. In this case scouting, history, background stories, and talent level are more accurate. Now if the compete level of the entire Anaheim Ducks organization raises to at least the NHL average then you can judge using stats. And that's everyone in the organization. Players, coaches, Gms, Presidents, Owners, trainers, etc. There is no way you can tell me this organization is tring when the Ducks are 18 million below the cap floor. And If they're not tring then everything is off. Bad data all the way through.

Oh. And to somewhat stay on topic. Comtois is talented. Strong, above average hands, above average speed, average skater, goes the net, good shot. But at times looks lost. I'd like to see him get better at playing the cycle game and moving without the puck. Right now he plays well in transition while receiving the puck when he has speed. But a strong player like him should make the cycle his bread a butter.
As far as comparison. Rackell should be good comparison. That's probably the type of player he needs to be.

His ass better... If the guy could hit an open net.. Z would've had another 10 pts..It's more than past time for him and Max Jones to get it together.

both are injured way too much for being as young as they are.

Both are poster boys for the March of Dimes..

I'm more of the eye test.. body language guy... and his sucked.. Now you can argue he's sick of losing and trying to carry a squad.. for me that is when true leadership is indicated.. and all I see him do is pout.

Now explain Stolarz's numbers, playing in front of the exact same team but in far worse circumstances. I've asked the same question here and to Eric Stephens at the Athletic, GMPV needs to find out if Gibby REALLY wants to be here and if he has truly bought into Verbeek's plan. If there is any doubt, he has to go.

Small sample size.,And a different way of playing. It's not just stolarz either. Miller looked good too. But it's one thing to start one day a month and have success. Especially when a team doesn't have time to prepare to play against you. You just show up as a unknown completely rested. But playing every game, teams get use to a goalie and can plan against him. You see it alot when goalies get hurt. A EBUG will come in as a unknown and shut a team out.
Although this point does make the case for good back up goalies to get more playing time. Have 2 good goalies and never tell anybody who's starting. You remember the last game of the year last season against the panthers. Gibby started the game, then by fluke luck he got hurt. The Stolarz played well then miraculously got hurt. Then the EBUG came in played well but gave up a goal and we lost the game. Now all three of them aren't the same. They just brought different looks that confused the other team. It's kind of like in baseball when you bring in different relief pitchers. Switching can confuse hitters.
And I'm not saying Stolarz is bad. It's just he has some advantages that Gibby doesn't.

Frankly at this time I'd go with B prospect, 2nd and 3rd.

2 low first and a good defensive prospect. Maybe we take a contract back to make the money work.

Like say if we trade with the Leafs. Their two 1st round picks, Sandhiem, and Peter Marzek. Or whatever bad contract the Leafs wanna get rid of. Ducks gotta lot of cap space.

That is a nice ask.. but no way ever Leafers go for that. They wouldn't even include Sanheim never even mind 2 first rounders..

A trade with Leafs looks like this..

Gibby / Comtois / 22nd OA and 10th OA for Willy / Kerfoot / Holl and Mrazek.

Yeah. Nylander is the new scape goat. So they might be OK with trading him. But the thing is, mrazek, holl, kerfoot are just salary dumps for the Leafs. So not much value there. I mean the Leafs are gonna have to pay to move Mrakeks contract. Kerfoot has some value. And holl hasn't got much value either. So the Ducks would be overpaying. But the framework of this trade is OK. Like your not getting 22nd pick just buy sending the Ducks your castoffs from the Leafs roster.

Now don't shoot me. But Gibson+ Comtois= Nylander. Only because Nylander makes alot of money. And is gonna want more in his next contact. That if we can get him to resign. So the rest isn't going to work.
I mean if you wana trade Kerfoot or Holl there will be some takers. Like the Ducks, Coyotes, Kraken. You just have to send a 2nd or 3rd pick and someone would be more than interested.

I respect the objectivity. I'm sure there is a GM out there that highly values Gibson. Looking at his last three years of play, I don't see his contract being worth the risk.

Nylander as a scapegoat is a bit of an old narrative. He’s a very good value contract. He could be moved but only if if the Leafs were very sure of the return

The leafs dont have Sanheim.....or did I miss something?
I wouldnt want the leafs to include willy in any trade for gibson.
You dont seem to pump gibson's tires in here as much as you do on the leafs thread.

That's fine. I don't think selling low on Gibson is good anyways. And Nylander is a very good player. The only thing I'd say about him is you don't wanna wait to late to trade him. His value is the highest it's ever gonna be. If you wait another year then the talk is gonna be that the Leafs have to trade Nylander to get capspace to resign Matthew's. But it would a very Kyle Dubas thing to do, if the Leafs hang on to Nylander for 2 more years because he "believes in this group". And Then try to resign him in free agency.
